Interview: Edinson Volquez, Pirates

DEJAN KOVACEVIC, DK ON PITTSBURGH SPORTS

ATLANTA — Spring training seems months ago for most, light-years ago for Edinson Volquez, tonight’s pitcher for the Pirates. No one has progressed more. No one has been more of a pleasant surprise. You know about the 12-7 record, the 3.15 ERA, but check this out: His 1.37 ERA in September ranks fourth among all National League starters. Going back further, he’s 4-0 with a 1.96 ERA over his past 11 starts, also fourth among the league’s starters.

Here’s our talk Wednesday in the visitors’ clubhouse at Turner Field.

Interview: Simon Despres, Penguins

DEJAN KOVACEVIC, DK ON PITTSBURGH SPORTS

Simon Despres will be one of the Penguins’ spotlight players in this training camp that formally pushed off Friday morning with the first practices at Consol Energy Center. I spoke with Despres about the pressure to finally step up into a full-time role, about being buried by the previous coaching staff and about Mario Lemieux’s remarks to me about Despres earlier this summer.

And if you missed it, here was my Penguins training camp preview column.

There will be more about the first on-ice day of camp later this afternoon.

Interview: Willie Gay, Steelers

DEJAN KOVACEVIC, DK ON PITTSBURGH SPORTS

Willie Gay, the Steelers’ eighth-year corner, saw his NFL career revitalized in 2013 after being released by the Cardinals in March. He appeared in all 16 games, started 11 and had an interception, nine passes defensed and two forced fumbles.

Something not many know: Gay has never missed an NFL game, and his 112 consecutive games are the most of any current corner in the league.

Interview: Mike Johnston, Penguins

DEJAN KOVACEVIC, DK ON PITTSBURGH SPORTS

Mike Johnston, the Penguins’ new coach, visited the Steelers’ HQ today for several hours, along with his top assistants, Rick Tocchet and Gary Agnew. They participated in different meetings, including one with the offense that was game-planning for the preseason game Thursday vs. Carolina. They also were taken for tours around the facility by Mike Tomlin, mega-hockey fan Kevin Colbert and Art Rooney II.

This is my interview with Johnston once they were done.

Interview: Steve McLendon, Steelers

DEJAN KOVACEVIC, DK ON PITTSBURGH SPORTS

Be patient with Big Mac.

Steve McLendon speaks in a hushed, reserved tone, which might give off the initial impression he doesn’t have much to say. It isn’t so. The Steelers’ nose tackle is as introspective as anyone I’ve encountered on the roster. He’s imaginative in his preparation, once having turned to ballet as part of his workouts. He’s intense. And he’s supremely determined to be the man who succeeds — in every sense of the term — Casey Hampton.

Give him a chance. I think you’ll like what he had to say in this three-minute chat the other day on the South Side. And pay no mind to that ruffling sound. He was taping his fingers the entire time.

I’m traveling to Philadelphia today for tonight’s 7:30 kickoff with the Eagles. I’ll have full coverage, including a column, from there.

Interview: Chad Voytik, Pitt football

DEJAN KOVACEVIC, DK ON PITTSBURGH SPORTS

Chad Voytik, Pitt’s sophomore quarterback, is entering his first season as a starter after a year of being redshirted behind Tino Sunseri and a year of backing up Tom Savage. He appeared in four games last season, including a winning relief role in the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl vs. Bowling Green.

I interviewed Voytik after the Panthers’ practice today on the South Side.

Interview: Tristan Jarry, Penguins

DEJAN KOVACEVIC, DK ON PITTSBURGH SPORTS

Here’s my recent interview with Tristan Jarry, the Penguins’ top pick in the 2013 NHL Draft as a second-rounder, from the team’s recent development camp.

Jarry, 19, won the Memorial Cup this past season with the Edmonton Oil Kings, posting a 16-4-1 record, 2.19 goals-against average, .925 save percentage in the WHL playoffs.

Interview: Daniel McCullers, Steelers

DEJAN KOVACEVIC, DK ON PITTSBURGH SPORTS

LATROBE, Pa. – Daniel McCullers, the Steelers’ sixth-round nose tackle, has turned heads across Saint Vincent College for his 6-7, 352-pound frame, not only because it stands out on a roster of behemoths but also because he carries that weight to the point where he isn’t remotely overweight.
