Some tech stuff, more radio 30

DEJAN KOVACEVIC, DK ON PITTSBURGH SPORTS

Couple of small updates today …

• The site’s entering its 10th day, and I’d like to think it’s gone mostly well aside from yesterday’s crash. A handful of readers are having issues with the paywall, and there were two columns that for some reason couldn’t be clicked. Both issues are being handled today by the respective clients.

• In the interim, the most effective advice is to clear your browser’s cache, enable cookies, then log in again. It’s worked for most.

We’re getting there. Your patience is appreciated.

• Incredibly, even with the crash, yesterday was our best day on the site, both for traffic and for subscribers if you don’t count the first two days. Go figure.

• I’m hosting a full show today on 105.9 the X, 3-6 p.m., filling in again for Mark Madden.

    Well, Pirates Management???

Why were no moves made yesterdday??? I understand it if the Rays and Red Sox wanted MLB calibar starters in return for their starters but why couldnt a move have been made to add bullpen depth? Ive defended this

    1. Dom says:

I meant to say that I have defended this management against those who feel the Owners are pocketing the profits and when they do nothing at the deadline, even I start questioning their motives.

      1. Dom says:

Although I still feel that the owners are not pocketing profits, they deserve to have this criticism when they refuse to add just $2 million to make the qualifying offer to AJ and when they did nada yesterday.

        Hey Joe,
Read all three of the links, and enjoyed them. Looks like you and DK are on to something with the three-link concept!
DK has praised Bernie in the past. His post-trade column was really well written. Stu

        Glad you enjoyed the links

  4. Jandy says:

Well, after EYE knocked the site out of commission with the SPAM thingie, this is nuthin’ ;) I’m sure all will be resolved in short order.

  5. Tom P. says:

After 108 games (2/3 of the way through the season), the Pirates’ 18-games splits are as follows: 8-10, 8-10, 9-9, 10-8, 12-6, 10-8. For anybody new to the blog, if a team averages a record of 10-8 over the nine 18-game segments of a season, it ends up with 90 wins.

    1. Tom P. says:

Looking at the numbers, I get the impression that (except for that stretch where the Pirates played a number of last place teams in a row), this is a .500 baseball team. Having said that, the Pirates are still close to a playoff spot, and no other team in the division is hot.

so i have been wondering why there hasnt been a new DK blog on the trib for a few weeks… now i know why

Time for more stupid questions: What is the purpose of the upvotes and downvotes? Can negative consequences come of anyone who gets too many downvotes?

    1. Oshie says:

I agree. Downvotes, particulary, have a chilling effect on comments, I think. I never issue them, and never will. Intellectually lazy discourse.

    2. Jandy says:

I find myself using the upvote more frequently, but don’t want the downvote eliminated. It’s a blog, downvotes wouldn’t scare me off or bother me.

dps, it’s just a way to agree or disagree. I like them :)

      1. Oshie says:

Hey Jandy! I’m going to a car show this weekend. Lots of people selling parts. Need anything ? :)

      2. Jandy says:

        Oh yeah..can I come too? ;)

      3. patrick(ri) says:

I think the downvote is useful for some folks who are offended by a comment but do not wish to be confrontational, or lack a personality as healthy and strong as yours, Jandy.

      4. Jandy says:

Patrick, are you trying to say I’m pushy? ;)
        haha!

    3. Tom P. says:

I see the upvotes and downvotes as replacing the +1 designation we have used in the past to show agreement with a post. I don’t remember too many -1′s. I don’t think that a downvote is equal to getting voted off of the island, so to speak.

  8. Oshie says:

Happy August! To borrow and paraphrase from golf parlance: August is moving month in baseball. A non-sports highlight today: Guardians of the Galaxy opens today. The comic is wonderful and one of my all time faves. Critics I respect giving the film love, as well.

    1. Johnny Styles says:

I’ll be seeing it on Tuesday. Can’t wait.

    2. SeanAY says:

Mrs. SeanAY are looking forward to seeing it tonight! Not terribly familiar with the source material, as I’m not really into the “cosmic” side of the Marvel or DC universes (except for Geoff Johns’ “Green Lantern” run).

      1. Milo Hamilton says:

        Sean,

How did you guys ever get Andy Murray to coach your hockey team ? That’s a really good get.

      2. SeanAY says:

I had only been here something like, a month when they hired Andy, so I don’t really know exactly. But he loves it here, and we love having him.

When you can throw the former Canadian World Jrs. coach at a Canadian recruit, that’s like fishing with dynamite.
