  2. Biz says:

    Any update on Pedro’s injury?

    1. JAL says:

Haven’t seen anything Alvarez and Snider listed on the bench but that nay be just because they are on the active roster.

  3. -1

Tabata batting second and no Lunchie against a RHP. Mercy.

  4. Tom P. says:

Big weekend for the Pirates, one reason being that Milwaukee is at SF for three games. Really can’t afford to lose ground to either, so at least 2 wins is necessary. Plus, to go 19-10 as Groat suggests probably requires the sweep of one 3-game set. No time like the present.

  5. supernatural187 says:

Seeing people get excited about Hamilton speed makes me remember how truly great Rickey Henderson was and no one will touch 100 SB again

  6. What was Snider’s prognosis?

  7. kr70 says:

Is tomorrow the last day to pick up anyone from waivers?

    1. JAL says:

Not the last day but the day you pick them up and have them eligible for the postseason

  8. JAL says:

Lambo up, Cole optioned to Bristol

    1. Karen22 says:

      ???

      1. JAL says:

Paper transaction, won’t miss a start because rosters expand before his his next start

      2. JAL says:

Cole will not even leave Pittsburgh, Bristol’s last game of the season is tonight

      3. Karen22 says:

        Oh – got it…

      4. Cole shuts down the Cards then goes back to Rookie League. The oddities of baseball.

        ;)

  9. toochca says:

Yadi Molina rejoins the Cardinals today.

  10. Captain Lou says:

Good evening everyone. This is the Captain signing in.

  11. Thomas Armstrong says:

Ok, Folks…5 months down…1 to go. Wow. Let’s “Light up the lights on Broadway” to quote The Gunner!

    1. toochca says:

I don’t remember that one from the Gunner. I’m sure there are plenty more of his that I have forgotten as well.

      1. I remember that one and all his other ones. What a character.

      2. Thomas Armstrong says:

That was his strike 3 call, Toochca

  12. Florida Steeler says:

Why the hell can’t Pirate pitchers bunt?

  13. Patrick(ri) says:

    Brooks Harrison at third.

    1. DJ says:

      Geez, what a difference.
      .
Look forward to the spectacular rather than cringe on every throw.

  14. Tom P. says:

Volquez through 4 on 41 pitches.

  15. Tom P. says:

Second game in a row that the Pirates starter has pitched at least 5.2 innings if no-hit ball.

  16. Florida Steeler says:
    -5

If Andrew is hurt, he should not be playing. Mike Leake ran a third strike out harder than Andrew a ground out.

    1. Arriba Wilver says:

C’mon, man. Who should be playing instead?

  17. Ragpicker says:

    JHAY = MVP

    1. Ragpicker says:

      Ditto!!!

  18. Arriba Wilver says:

    Volquez and Harrison.

    Neal’s a genius.

    1. pattonbb says:

You beat me to it, AW. :)

  19. Karen22 says:

    Please get Eddie some RUNS!!

    1. Barb says:

      AMEN!

  20. Arriba Wilver says:

Maybe Ike reads the blog and disagreed with NMR’s declaration that Pedro was clearly the Pirates best defensive 1st baseman.

    Nice play.

    1. Biz says:

Hope you are enjoying the game, bring home a W

  21. Florida Steeler says:

    speed kills.

  22. Patrick(ri) says:

    Just wow!

  23. Tom P. says:

Just when you think the Pirates are sunk, they get three straight hits and 2 runs.

  24. DJ says:

Watson bucking for most wins on staff.
    .
Has there ever been a RP to lead a team?

    1. JAL says:

1959, Roy face tied Vern Law in wins, both had 18

      1. DJ says:

        18? Crazy ! ! !
        .
        Thanks, JAL.

      2. WarHorse says:

I remember a point in the season when Elroy was something like 17-0.

    2. In 1959, reliever Elroy Face went 18-1 to tie staff ace Vernon Law, who went 18-9.

    3. AJS says:

Funny. That just means he backs into a lot of them given his status in the penm It seems Tony has an issue when guys are on. They score he blows a save but still keeps his era low because the run isnt his. Team scores next inning and watson gets a win.

  25. stuart66 says:

I think I recall Elroy Face winning 19 or more in, I think, 1958.

My namesake hit several late inning HRs to get some of those wins.
    Stuart

  26. Thomas Armstrong says:

    Brooks…again!

  27. Thomas Armstrong says:

    THIS was Special win!

  28. Lad 9 says:

Raise it. What a baseball game! J Hay for president! Woo hoo!!!

    1. Karen22 says:

AbsoBUCNtootly! Classic baseball game…and the Good Guys win to boot! :)

  29. JAL says:

That was an excellent baseball game by both teams

    1. Thomas Armstrong says:

This is why baseball is the great game it is. Agree w/you

      1. Lad 9 says:

+ many. This game showed why baseball is the best game to watch.

      2. Ghost says:

Couldn’t agree more, guys. And this coming from a life long Steeler fan who had always put them first. I think baseball just grows on you better with age.

  30. Pucknutz says:

Single, double, triple, throw a guy out at the the plate after bobble city… JHAY !!!

  31. DJ says:

Is it time to start thinking of JHay as our regular 3B?

    1. WarHorse says:

After tonight, that’s a done deal.

    2. Pucknutz says:

Well it may be a small data set so far …. but … w/Pedro starting to look comfy at first … aint much thinkin needed DJ , do ya think! :)

      1. DJ says:

For me, crossed to “entrenched” status tonight.

    3. Cennydd says:

      OMG! Is it still July?

  32. Thomas Armstrong says:

After the 7 game losing streak..
now they win 5 of 7… Impressive.

Good Evening to all. Have good night.

  33. WarHorse says:

That was a memorable ball game–one of the best of the season. We are fortunate to have a player of Harrison’s calibre, not only as a hitter but as a natural third baseman. Honestly, I did not think a few weeks ago that Harrison would be as good a fielder as Pedro was. But he is!

    1. Ghost says:

Absolutely, War. And Harrison will get better yet as he is left alone there and no longer bounced around, not knowing each day where to take pre-game reps. (And my hat is off to you as I prefer calling him by his name too, rather than that “J-Hay” stuff.)

    2. Biz says:

I think JHay is best for us as a supersub, play most all positions to give guys a day off. Ben Zobrist?

      1. Ghost says:

Biz, he’s been “super” as a “sub,” but I absolutely believe he’ll be even better given one position to concentrate on. Mentally, it’s very hard to be constantly bounced around each day. The throws and the fielding angles are different from position to position…

      2. Ghost says:

…And I think the Pirates will be better for it, too. I really think Harrison is on his way to being an elite 3rd baseman. Quick as a bunny, strong accurate arm — he’s going to be popular with a lot of Bucco pitchers. If Pedro locks down 1st, we’ll actually have great infield.

      3. Biz says:

I don’t know, my friend, I’m just happy we have him. I was really pissed on the trade at the time, but then there is this throw-in that is pretty much saving the season. I still think Pedro is the short term answer at 3rd

      4. Biz says:

Grit, character, guts, all of that, but not the power of the current elite 3rd basemen. Just sayin ;-)

      5. Ghost says:

Biz, he won’t ever reach the HR totals Pedro can, that’s true. But I think he can approach 20 dingers in a season. And all the other offensive components he provides make him a true weapon. He’s factored in so many of our wins, this year. And he’s defense is only getting better.

      6. Ghost says:

(Dang, this 280 character limit can be frustrating… ;-) )

Anyway, thanks Biz. However Harrison is used, he’s certainly a treat, isn’t he? I gotta run! (Haven’t had dinner out here, yet. :-0 )

  34. chethejet says:

Elroy 19 wins in 1959. I recall he and Luis Arroyo also threw a fork ball, But I cold be wrong on the latter point, Harrison is playing good defense at third and Pedro may want to seriously concentrate on the bag at 1st from here on in.

    1. Biz says:

I think Elroy was 18-0 at one point. I met him at a Bob Prince Charities event. A very nice guy. What would that arm be worth today? I was at Forbes Field when he was traded to the Tigers, I’m pretty sure Steve Blass was taken out early, so Elroy got to tie the record for moss

      1. got to listen to the Gunner call most of those 18 wins – Face actually would often come in with a lead – the game would get tied and then the Bucs would score the winning run – just a phenomenal streak that mixed good – not really great pitching and good luck.

  35. Biz says:
    -1

I still hope, and hope and hope

I do expect Slick Frank and the management team will continue to make me expect though :-)

  36. So did you miss me? I just got in the door from a really great game on a really great night at the best stadium in Baseball. Big play JHay to start the DP in the 7th-he looks more comfortable there every start & u know who a big pinch hit single ;-) Hope is still alive! 18& in!

  37. Giant up 4-0 on Peralta – 2 men on 1 out in the 2nd ;-)

  38. 7-1 Giants – I am dreaming of a sweeping the Reds and a Giants Sweep of the Brew Crew. Waking up Monday one game back would be cool.

  39. 13-2

I should not be enjoying this as much as I am ;-)
