Podcast: Talking Haley, Geno with Madden
Here’s the podcast of my in-studio segment this afternoon with Mark Madden on 105.9 the X. We positively annihilated Todd Haley, wondered what Mike Tomlin can do to save the Steelers’ season, then debated Evgeni Malkin as a right winger. Fun stuff, front to finish.

Great value added to have easy access to these. Always enjoyable…
Oct 15, 2014 @ 23:44:53
Great addition to the site. I still think they can beat Houston this week.
Oct 15, 2014 @ 18:35:42
Why does Mark Shout so much?
Oct 15, 2014 @ 19:56:29
Because those who know the least, know it the loudest. His dime-store psychoanalysis on why Haley calls sideline routes, or how Steelers are supposedly still punishing Ben for Milledgeville is idiotic. I listened to this because was curious if DK was going to repeat Ben misqote.
Oct 15, 2014 @ 20:06:45
Yeah, it still kinda blows my mind that DK can easily have a problem with some people here who’s opinions and off-putting style might rub him wrong, but seems to genuinely like Madden…someone who’s transparent lack of fact and tact is obvious to anyone under any rock, anywhere.
Oct 15, 2014 @ 20:12:47
I don’t have a problem with anyone anywhere over sports opinions. If you can think of an example, I’m all ears. My only issues ever are with personal or professional attacks.
Oct 15, 2014 @ 19:58:33
Generally; people who shout are trying to overcompensate for having nothing worth saying and try to use aggressive and intimidating behavior in an attempt to get others to listen and/or believe them. That and it seems anymore, shouting is the only way get anyone’s attention.
Oct 15, 2014 @ 20:03:44
Great minds, and all that.
Oct 15, 2014 @ 20:07:28

Oct 17, 2014 @ 09:11:37
If you can’t be right, be loud
Oct 15, 2014 @ 20:02:39
And yes, you did misquote Ben. Twice now. He did NOT accuse the media of panicking (Ben says media ‘panicking’” “I think *you* guys are panicking” ).
What he actually said was “I think you guys are all waiting for us to, like, panic and stuff.”
There is a clear difference.
Oct 15, 2014 @ 20:10:24
No one was misquoted. If you were there, Ghost, you should have introduced yourself. I didn’t see you.
Oct 15, 2014 @ 20:15:35
You didn’t see me because, well, I’m a ghost.
Seriously though, it’s on the first vid in the cue here:
http://www.steelers.com/video-and-audio/videos/Roethlisberger_Were_not_panicking/aaef7cde-9952-4248-8e07-e5afeee4b8a
Stuff happens, but I think you might want 2 add correction.
Oct 15, 2014 @ 20:21:34
Ben talked for 11 minutes. Panic came up three times. One of those is on here. This video is three minutes long. Not only is it spliced but, most peculiarly, the contents are out of order. Weird.
Oct 15, 2014 @ 20:24:12
But hey, thanks for the show of faith! There’s a reason reporters actually cover these things rather than relying on team-edited video/audio.
Oct 15, 2014 @ 20:25:28
When Tomlin made some sort of remark about the media in Philadelphia, the Steelers struck it from the transcript passed out that night. And this was preseason!
Oct 15, 2014 @ 20:35:42
“But hey, thanks for the show of faith!”
Faith is not the issue: What I heard on the video is correct. But if Ben also said what you report, then my apologies for posting that you misquoted him.
Oct 15, 2014 @ 20:38:36
What you heard on video is correct. But again, there was much more. And in context. No need to apologize. You couldn’t have known length of session. Here’s another source: https://twitter.com/willgravesap/status/522432124528640001
Oct 15, 2014 @ 20:47:14
I appreciate that. Do just want to repeat that I have lost no “faith” in your integrity as a journalist. It’s just it appeared you had mistranscribed what Ben said and, hey, nobody is perfect. By now, I’m sure you’ve noticed I get defensive about Ben.
Oct 15, 2014 @ 20:48:19
I avoid transcripts at all costs. That’s why you go. Including on the road.
Oct 15, 2014 @ 20:19:50
Great radio w/MM…my question is did the steelers try to hold on too long to the core Super Bowl defense and are paying for it now.
Oct 15, 2014 @ 21:35:41
Dejan, you were very clear on the show with Madden about your thoughts on Haley and his initial hiring. Somehow, this was the first time I’d ever heard that Haley never actually played football. Interesting – and a little scary.
Oct 15, 2014 @ 22:30:08
Would it make you feel any better about his playcalling if Haley had ever played football?
Oct 15, 2014 @ 22:28:35
Seems like you’re the only person in the Pittsburgh media who thinks when Geno should go back to center should be tied only to his conditioning and not to how Sutter looks, whether the 2nd line ‘works’, Beau Bennett’s health, etc.
What do you know that nobody else seems to know?
Oct 15, 2014 @ 23:19:55
Wow
I’m going back under the bed. I was going to ask when was the first date for the lunatic nation, i.e. Dejan’s first post on the internet. Nevermind
Oct 16, 2014 @ 01:05:33
July of ’08, if I recall…
I joined in about a week after the launch. JAL, Baywatch, G-man were already there.
Oct 16, 2014 @ 11:48:20
I used to think that, Ghost. But that was the “formal” launch. I think it started sometime before the baseball draft that year because people I trust said they participated around that time.
Oct 16, 2014 @ 12:05:30
I’m a tad fuzzy as to when exactly Blog launched. June draft, or thenabouts, could well be correct. Just remember DK telling us the blog was a-coming for a little while, then it launched, then I jumped in after a week on sidelines. But I now see Biz’ Q is actually not about Blog.

“I’m very disappointed to hear that Senator Ted Kennedy of Massachusetts is near death because of a brain tumor. I always hoped Senator Kennedy would live long enough to be assassinated.” – Madden
This is the vile person that DK seems to enjoy the company of.
Oct 17, 2014 @ 09:20:20
I’m living in NY & MA, so don’t get to hear much Pittsburgh radio. My recollection of Madden from his PG column is that he had a real iconoclast bent. Might stem from an early life Stargell/Clemente story.
Seems smart, clearly funny. Needs to tame some stuff.
Oct 16, 2014 @ 08:14:20
Mark Madden is the man!!!
He is the GREATEST radio host in Pittsburgh sports history.
Oct 16, 2014 @ 10:53:18
Haley getting the OC job in the first place given his record of failure was bad enough. The fact he’s still here and cocooned by excuse-making for his continued failure is even worse. But my question DK is: If Art II hired Haley, does Tomlin even have the power to fire him?
Oct 16, 2014 @ 14:01:22
Tomlin doesn’t own the team. So, I don’t think he has the authority to unilaterally hire or fire someone at the coordinator level. I would think he has to get approval from the Rooneys.
Oct 16, 2014 @ 14:30:41
I guess I was assuming Jim, that a Super Bowl winning coach would have final say over his Coordinators. Whether “yes” or “no” has to greatly shade one’s opinion of how well Tomlin has, or can do, his job of winning football games.
Oct 16, 2014 @ 16:32:23
Ok, I think I misunderstood what you mean, Wolft. That’s a good question. I wonder if the lack of succcess over last 3 yrs has cost Tomlin the ability to get his way with the Rooneys regarding firing a guy that might have yrs left on his contract.
Oct 16, 2014 @ 11:44:40
I thought the podcast was great and love the frankness on Haley, Tomlin, Colbert, Ben and the front office. All the other outlets sugar coat the current state of the team. I feel that the Steelers Front Office is going to be content if they get out of this season Treading water.
Oct 16, 2014 @ 12:19:01
I enjoy Madden, too, overall. He does go overboard at times. I guess that makes me a bad person. Tough noogies.
Oct 17, 2014 @ 09:41:22
MM’s attitude & way of showing disagreement is very off putting. Miss DK podcasts of the previous era greatly, wish he was on w/ANYONE else. Willing to guess as a youngin’ MM was smart as a whip, but got bad marks on “plays well with others.” Even DK can only bring so much tact.
