News/views: Penguins pushing Bennett hard

CALGARY, Alberta — For what the Penguins announced would be an optional skate this morning at Scotiabank Saddledome, it sure wasn’t optional for Beau Bennett. He remained on the ice even after the injured players, the backup goaltender and the coaches.

That signified two things, both meaningful:

• He won’t dress tonight against the Flames, marking a second consecutive healthy scratch, a scenario few would have thought possible not so long ago.

• The coaches are doing more than sending a message.

This was Mike Johnston’s explanation, given while Bennett was still on the ice: “We wanted to spend some time working with him on the ice, so we spent some time working with him. And then there’s the thing where your team is playing well and you’ve got to make a change if you’re going to bring him back in the lineup. We want to develop Beau. He’s a good, young player. He’s going to be a big part of our organization. Part of that development is getting him some extra work on the ice.”

Super Bowl XLIX - New England Patriots v Seattle Seahawks

News: Patriots win, 28-24.

Views: How deflating.

And I don’t just mean for the Seahawks, the Pacific Northwest or the nation as a whole that wanted New England to fall on its face after yet another cheating scandal.

I mean for … man, the fundamental concept of sanity.

Seriously, what was Pete Carroll thinking?

News/views: Penguins fall to NHL’s finest

Nashville Predators v Pittsburgh Penguins

News: The Penguins fell hard to the Predators, 4-0, in a faceoff with the NHL’s best team.

Views: This was a strange game for a slew of reasons.

Chief among them was that the home side largely dictated the flow, while the visitors sat back in Peter Laviolette’s standard 1-2-2 and waited. The Penguins mostly — and rightly — pressed the attack, and they created their share of chances, even outright breakaways on Nashville backup Carter Hutton. Maxim Lapierre and Nick Spaling clanged clean shots off the pipe behind Hutton. There were three power plays, too. Didn’t matter. Five shots, zip to show for them. This opponent, built on powerhouse defensemen Shea Weber and Seth Jones, blocked, saved and cleared.

“We talk about competing, but you’ve got to compete offensively, too,” Mike Johnston said afterward. “A team like Nashville, they’re going to keep you to the outside.”

News/views: This Bus goes right to Canton

News: Jerome Bettis was just elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Views: This is excellent. And richly deserved.

Nobody in our city with a sporting pulse needs a synopsis of why that is, but suffice it to say that Bettis, 42, was the iconic power back of his generation and the iconic member of the Steelers’ first post-dynasty Super Bowl championship.

It was the late, great Myron Cope who popularized calling him The Bus, and it’s a nickname that became only more brilliant over time, as we watched Bettis grow into a relentless, no-nonsense, straight-ahead runner the likes of which the NFL, to be candid, hasn’t seen since his retirement. Others could ricochet or run around end, but the Bus would drive and park any place he pleased. He wound up sixth on the all-time rushing list with 13,662 yards and amassed 50 100-yard games for the Steelers, but it’s the how that captured hearts and minds and even had fans wearing miniature school buses on imitation mining helmets.

News/views: Penguins trade Goc for Lapierre

News: The Penguins just traded fourth-line centers with the Blues, acquiring Maxim Lapierre for Marcel Goc.

Views: Not much to see here. Goc is better on faceoffs, and they’re equally productive offensively — which is to say not at all — so this clearly came down to simple preference for grit over a specific skill set. Lapierre has only 16 penalty minutes this season, but he’s usually in the 60-70 range. I won’t begrudge Jim Rutherford and the coaching staff seeking more sandpaper.

News/views: Pirates send Snider to O’s … why?

News: The Pirates just traded outfielder Travis Snider to the Orioles for pitching prospect Stephen Tarpley and a player to be named later.

Views: Um, why?

No offense to Tarpley, a 21-year-old left-hander who might well have a fine future, but he’s nothing special. His 2014 saw a 3.66 ERA in 12 starts at the short-season Class A level, as well as a .279 opponents’ batting average, 60 strikeouts and 24 walks in 66 innings. That’s not going to turn many heads, much less turn over a purported contending roster.

News/views: Rinaldo gets eight games … really

News: Zac Rinaldo, the Flyers’ hired thug who blindsided Kris Letang last Tuesday in Philadelphia, was just suspended eight games by the NHL.

Views: That’s it?

Wow, I mean, you think you’ve seen maybe Exhibit A for a repeat offender willfully injuring an opponent, then not only expressing zero remorse but actually publicly gloating about it and then, on top of all that, blowing off his hearing with the league … and somehow the NHL’s Department of Hilarious Inconsistency gets eight games out of that.

News/views: Letang, Hornqvist set to return

BY DEJAN KOVACEVIC

News: Kris Letang and Patric Hornqvist returned to practice for the Penguins here at Consol Energy Center, and both could be available as soon as tomorrow against the visiting Jets. At same time, though, Evgeni Malkin was placed on injured reserve, likely meaning he’ll miss Winnipeg, the trip to Washington the next day and maybe more. Sidney Crosby didn’t practice but should play in D.C. Blake Comeau resumed skating, but he’s 5-7 days away from a full practice.

Views: Got all that?

Good, because that’s what a Penguins update looks like after an All-Star break. Injuries, injuries and more injuries. And I didn’t even mention that David Perron left practice early due to illness, or that Simon Despres looked like death warmed over.

But at least they’re only facing hockey’s hottest team tomorrow, right?

News/views: Crosby joins Malkin on All-Star shelf

Chicago Blackhawks v Pittsburgh Penguins

BY DEJAN KOVACEVIC

News: Sidney Crosby just joined the Penguins’ other superstar, Evgeni Malkin, in sitting out the NHL All-Star Game this weekend in Columbus. Both are out, the team announced, with lower-body injuries. No other details, per the norm, were given.

Views: Wonderful.

The NHL’s All-Star festivities, in general, are an epic waste of time, even more than those of other leagues. There’s no tangible benefit to Crosby, Malkin or the Penguins in participating, and I’d say the same of Marc-Andre Fleury, who will spend the next two days doing splits against repeated breakaways rather than enjoying a few days off.

BY DEJAN KOVACEVIC

News: LeGarrette Blount, released by the Steelers in November, rushes for 148 yards and three touchdowns to carry the Patriots into the Super Bowl against the Seahawks.

Views: This will serve as Exhibit A for classic sports hindsight, I’ll predict, for the next two weeks. And it’s sure to be ridiculous to the core.
