News/views: Paterno’s wins restored

BY DEJAN KOVACEVIC

News: The NCAA, faced with a lawsuit from the Paterno family, has reached a settlement to restore Joe Paterno’s 111 wins vacated because of the Jerry Sandusky serial child rape scandal.

Views: I’m going to be sick. Seriously, I’ve got nothing for you on this topic without getting really, really nasty, so please allow me to keep this one to myself.

This was what I reported from State College at the time about Paterno’s legacy.

This was what I reported a year later about Paterno’s clear complicity in Sandusky’s crimes.

That’s all I’ve got. I hope everyone involved in this rots in hell for a whole lot longer than it took the NCAA to cower on this matter. And that’s not hyperbole. Children’s lives were ruined.

These were children.

News/views: Pirates sign Kang

BY DEJAN KOVACEVIC

News: The Pirates sign Korean slugger Jung-Ho Kang, four years for a maximum $11 million guaranteed. That includes the potential buyout of a fifth-year club option of $5.5 million.

Views: Very much to be expected once they’d won the bidding for the rights to negotiate a contract. My initial thoughts on Kang ran Dec. 22 after the bidding process. I’ll have more after Neal Huntington’s 11:45 a.m. conference call.

News/views: Maatta’s miserable season ends

Toronto Maple Leafs v Pittsburgh Penguins

BY DEJAN KOVACEVIC

News: Olli Maatta’s shoulder will undergo surgery Wednesday, ending his season, the Penguins announced minutes after the Tuesday game against the Wild.

Views: Man, what else could have gone wrong for the kid?

Maatta’s 20th birthday came in August, and it was accompanied by a hard push through training camp to overcome his May shoulder surgery, then the thyroid cancer that cost him a month, then the mumps, and now a second surgery on the same shoulder. As Sidney Crosby and others have noted, he’s tough, and he’ll have to be. This will be a lot of time away from doing what he loves, and that can make any of us a little loopy. What’s more, he’ll come back to the next camp with lingering questions about the stability of the shoulder.

There will be another question, too: Was Maatta allowed to return too soon?

News/views: Butler right man, right time

Carolina Panthers v Pittsburgh Steelers

BY DEJAN KOVACEVIC

News: Keith Butler will, indeed, be the Steelers’ new defensive coordinator, according to a report by Gerry Dulac in the Post-Gazette. That corroborates the information that led me to write on this site in a Saturday piece that Butler would be the choice to replace Dick LeBeau. An announcement by the team, per the report, could come Tuesday.

UPDATE 11:02 a.m.: The Steelers make this official.

Views: There’s nothing not to like about this move.

Butler, 58, is immensely qualified for this opportunity. Overqualified, actually. There aren’t many NFL positional coaches who stay a dozen years in one role, let alone one place. But Butler has served as the Steelers’ linebackers coach since 2003 — hired by Bill Cowher — and did likewise for the Browns the previous four seasons. Some will attach a stigma to that, but that’s unfair. Several teams offered Butler defensive coordinator interviews and even jobs, and he turned them down, in part because of his loyalty to Mike Tomlin and the Rooneys, in part — probably a larger part — because the team compensated him well to stay put. Regardless, he could have been doing this job somewhere else two, three years ago, maybe further back.

News/views: Crosby, Malkin named All-Stars

BY DEJAN KOVACEVIC

News: Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin were named the Penguins’ representatives to the NHL All-Star Game Jan. 25 in Columbus, each selected for the fifth time.

Views: We take this stuff with a yawn, but it’s still praiseworthy.

A strong argument could have been made for Marc-Andre Fleury, with five goaltenders chosen, especially ahead of the Blue Jackets’ Sergei Bobrovsky, but the league is trying to promote the game in Ohio, and it’s pretty predictable that would happen. And hardly the end of the world. If I’m the Penguins, actually, I’m delighted he’s not going. A break would be far more beneficial than all that groin-stretching in the Skills Competition.

News/views: LeBeau, Steelers have ‘mutual parting’

Pittsburgh Steelers v Tennessee Titans

BY DEJAN KOVACEVIC

News: Dick LeBeau has left the Steelers, according to the Urbana Daily Citizen in his native Ohio. He told the paper, “I’m resigning my position, not retiring,” and called it “a mutual parting.”

Views: So much for status quo this offseason.

LeBeau, 77, is nothing less than a legend with the Steelers’ franchise, not least of which was for presiding over two Super Bowl champions and dominating, innovative defenses. And he never should be the focus of singular blame for how far that defense fell the past three years. That had far more to do with a crumbling secondary and, preceding that, a lack of emphasis on the secondary in recent draft. The man had a tremendous run.

News: The NFL was all but completely exonerated in its handling of the Ray Rice case by a 96-page report just released by former FBI director Robert Mueller. The headline finding: “We found no evidence that anyone at the NFL had or saw the in-elevator video before it was publicly shown.”

Views: Oh, do at least try to act surprised.

Steelers PATs: Did Ben need to apologize?

Wild Card Playoffs - Baltimore Ravens v Pittsburgh Steelers

Ben Roethlisberger walks off the field after his fourth-quarter interception Saturday night. — GETTY

BY DEJAN KOVACEVIC

One last look at the Steelers’ (for real) last game …

• Ben Roethlisberger apologized to pretty much everyone who’s ever known a 412 or 724 area code Saturday night, including “the fans, my teammates, the organization, the Rooneys and the coaches.” And his explanation for that was that he “didn’t play well enough to win.”

The latter is indisputable, obviously, as is any assessment that Ben wasn’t at his best.

But was he that bad?

Depends on how one would like to dole out the blame, I suppose.

BY DEJAN KOVACEVIC

News: The Penguins overtake Tampa Bay for first place in the Eastern Conference by outgunning the Lightning, 6-3, Friday at Consol Energy Center.

Views: This is quite the hockey team, and by that I’m referring to the resiliency.

I asked Nick Spaling about that afterward:
