Welcome to Tuesday 12 Qs, our chat that takes place each week at 2 p.m. and tosses the keys to you to do the driving.

UPDATE 2 p.m.: Away we go …

bernard.diggins: Seriously, Ben Roethlisberger has to be the real MVP of this team regardless of how the players vote, right? What is their record without Ben? Great seasons for each of the big three, but ask Mike Tomlin which player he’d most hate to lose for the playoffs, and he won’t hesitate with the answer.

DK: A lot of variables come into play with a debate like this, and it sounds like the one you’re prioritizing is the position. Almost any team would hate to lose its QB more than any other position. And that would apply doubly for the Steelers, when the drop would take them from Roethlisberger to Bruce Gradkowski.

Friday Insider: How Blake Comeau was uncovered

Weekly roundup of a lot of randomness from a lot of time around our city’s teams …

fridayinsider• A good scout never stops scouting, per the vernacular.

That might best explain how the Penguins’ front office was able to uncover Blake Comeau, whose overtime goal in the 1-0 shutout of the visiting Avalanche on Thursday night was his 11th of the young NHL season, a total that stunningly matches the number of goals scored in his previous three full seasons with the Flames and Blue Jackets.

All that for a one-year, $700,000 contract, same salary as Craig Adams. and, beyond a doubt, the free-agent bargain of the year in the league.

“Not bad, huh?” Bill Guerin was saying after the game. “That’s a pretty good hockey player.”

News/views: Pederson out as Pitt AD

Steve Pederson employed four football coaches in a five-year span at Pitt. — PITT ATHLETICS

DEJAN KOVACEVIC, DK ON PITTSBURGH SPORTS

News: Steve Pederson is out as Pitt’s athletic director. New Chancellor Patrick Gallagher has appointed Dr. Randy P. Juhl, Vice Chancellor for research conduct and compliance, to serve as acting athletic director pending a national search for a replacement.

Views: Wow. Give me a minute here. Did not see that coming.

UPDATE 7:23 p.m.: OK, well again … wow. And I say wow from the standpoint of sublime timing on the part of the university administration, coordinating the timing of this — 7:04 p.m. — with the formal announcement from Madison that Paul Chryst is Wisconsin’s new head coach.

I’ve written it countless times, and I repeated it tonight on the radio: Pederson had no business conducting this coaching search. None. Not after Mike Haywood, Todd Graham and now Chryst leaving after only three years and a 19-19 record.

And when your AD has no business conducing a coaching search, he has no business being AD.

Tuesday 12 Qs: Gilbert, Ehrhoff, Pedro, Troy, Olli

Tampa Bay Buccaneers v Pittsburgh Steelers

DEJAN KOVACEVIC, DK ON PITTSBURGH SPORTS

Welcome to Tuesday 12 Qs, our chat that will take place this week at 3 p.m., an hour later than usual. Sorry, had to allow for a doctor’s checkup scheduled for 12:45 p.m. I might be back by 2, but there’s a chance I won’t, and I don’t want to risk it.

UPDATE 3 p.m.: Away we go …

Bridge: What the heck has Marcus Gilbert not done in his performance and preparation to not dictate a starting role over Mike Adams?

DK: Wow, way to start me off with an easy one!

Sorry, no idea.

I mean, Mike Tomlin did describe Gilbert’s injured ankle as not yet being ‘above the line’ at his press conference today, while at the same time saying he felt ‘positive’ about his return, while at the same time saying he wasn’t sure if Gilbert would hold his starting spot over Adams. So, one can take all of that, stir it in a pot, and still come up with nothing conclusive.

News/views: Reports say Chryst off to Wisconsin

DEJAN KOVACEVIC, DK ON PITTSBURGH SPORTS

News: Paul Chryst is ‘poised’ to leave Pitt and return to Wisconsin as head coach, according to a Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel report by Jeff Potrykus in the wee hours of Friday morning.

Views: The Journal-Sentinel cites one anonymous source. If there’s another report anywhere confirming this, I haven’t seen it yet. I’d rather wait for more. My own conversations with Pitt people late Friday night led me to write that something seemed amiss in today’s Friday Insider, but that’s as much as I’ve got at this hour.

Friday Insider: ‘Nobody wants Pedro’

Pedro-Alvarez2

DEJAN KOVACEVIC, DK ON PITTSBURGH SPORTS

Weekly roundup of a lot of randomness from a lot of time around our city’s teams …

fridayinsider• The Pirates busily addressed their rotation and bullpen at Major League Baseball’s Winter Meetings in San Diego, but they also lugged some familiar luggage back home: Pedro Alvarez will be their first baseman.

At least as things appear now.

A source with direct knowledge confirmed what was reported in the Insider last week, that management would eagerly pursue a trade of Alvarez at the Meetings, and that did, indeed, occur. But to no avail. And according to this source, absolutely no avail. In the words of this individual, “Nobody wants Pedro.”

There was no elaboration, though it’s hard to imagine what would be needed.

So here is how this sets up: The Pirates have no choice but to pay Alvarez the $6 million or so he’ll command through arbitration. They have no choice but to make him the starting first baseman, having sent out both Ike Davis and Gaby Sanchez. They have no choice but to deploy him at a position he doesn’t want to play. And in the interim, they have no authority to force him to do the extra work needed to enhance the chance of all this somehow working out.

Tuesday 12 Qs: Moats, Dumoulin, Cervelli, Pederson

DEJAN KOVACEVIC, DK ON PITTSBURGH SPORTS

Welcome to Tuesday 12 Qs, our chat that takes place each week at 2 p.m. — allowing ample time for me to get over to the South Side for the Mike Tomlin press conference, obviously — and encourages you to dictate the discussion.

UPDATE 2 p.m.: With the fresh news that the Pirates are bringing back Francisco Liriano for three years and $39 million — much more to come later on this — away we go:

Alan Gifford: Thoughts on the contract for Liriano?

DK: I’ve made thoughts on this clear leading up to this, and nothing changes, Alan: The Pirates needed to bring back Liriano to remain a contender. The Pirates recognized that need and took it seriously. The Pirates never took their eye off the ball, even after the Russell Martin disappointment. I thought maybe that might have gotten a bit distracted by Edinson Volquez also being out there, but last week’s Friday Insider set that straight. Frankie was the target.

Again, I’ll have much, much more on this later on the site. I just feel it’s fair to proceed with the chat at the scheduled time. But obviously, it’s a very, very good day for the Pittsburgh Baseball Club, from ownership on down.
