Column: The real divide between Duquesne, Pitt

Duquesne and Pitt line up for the National Anthem before tipoff Friday at Consol. — DUQUESNE ATHLETICS

The divide between our city’s two Division I basketball programs is not 14 points.

Nor is it the 14 consecutive victories for one over the other.

Yeah, both those figures played out Friday night at Consol Energy Center with James Robinson’s career-high 23 points headlining Pitt’s 76-62 dunking of Duquesne in the 83rd City Game, but that symptomatic snippet doesn’t begin to tell the tale.

Because it isn’t about the Panthers getting a stunning 12-point showing from ultra-spare center Joseph Uchebo, any more than it’s about all the Dukes’ myriad shortcomings cited in a blistering postgame review by Jim Ferry, any more than it’s how the overwhelming majority of the 14,905 in attendance showed to support Pitt.

No, it’s about Ryan Luther.

Friday Insider: Penguins’ phone ringing ‘off hook’

Weekly roundup of a lot of randomness from a lot of time around our city’s teams …

fridayinsider• The NHL already has Sharks and Predators, but you should also know it’s got sharks and predators.

General managers around the league have been calling the Penguins’ front office, I was told at Consol in the hours leading up to the 3-0 throttling by the Canucks on Thursday night, and it’s wholly because they smell blood with the recent injury losses of Pascal Dupuis and Chris Kunitz.

And this was before Patric Hornqvist was felled on a hellacious hit by Vancouver’s Ryan Stanton in the second period and did not return.

News: Pitt running back James Conner was named ACC Player of the Year Wednesday afternoon, edging Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston, the most recent Heisman Trophy winner.

Views: Richly deserved. And it shouldn’t have been as close as the 16-13 vote between the two, as decided by members of the Atlantic Coast Sports Media Association.

Welcome to Tuesday 12 Qs, our chat that takes place each week at 2 p.m. and encourages you to dictate the discussion.

photo-150x150The format is simple: Use the comments section below to submit an entry. No more than one per person, please. Submit early if you prefer, and I’ll pick from that batch to get rolling, then monitor new entries once we go live. All topics welcome, as always.

UPDATE 2 p.m.: And off we go …

Snovi LLC: If the Steelers go 8-8 and/or miss the playoffs, will it be considered a mistake to bring back so many old veterans instead of letting guys like Stephon Tuitt, Dan McCullers, Shamarko Thomas, etc. cut their teeth? Might have lost a few more games, but they would have gained a ton of valuable experience.

They’re going to need these guys next year, right?

DK: Yes, yes, a thousand times yes. But I’ll take it further, because I’m not sure the Steelers would have been worse at all with those players out there learning on the job as compared to Cam Thomas, Mike Mitchell and so forth.

News/views: Pitt bowl eligible … and so what?

News: Pitt beat Miami, 35-23, at Sun Life Stadium to level its record at 6-6 and, thus, is bowl eligible.

Views: Yeah, and so what?

Look, I don’t want to be mean here. There were points during this ongoing season that the Panthers looked like a legit contender. I found their early W at Boston College to be especially upbeat in that regard and reported as much from Chestnut Hill. Beating Virginia Tech at Heinz Field had a fine feel, as well. And even after the Akron debacle took place, I was more interested in how they’d fare in ACC play than in regurgitating old narratives. I’ve been anything but the standard Pitt basher.

But this?

Finishing .500 and waiting for the BBVA Compass Meineke Car Rental Who Cares Bowl to call?

Man, that’s stale. Especially when it’s the same result for all three of Paul Chryst’s seasons.

A weekly roundup of a lot of randomness from a lot of time around our city’s teams …

fridayinsider• The Pirates “certainly can and I suspect will” top the $90 million mark in payroll in 2015, Frank Coonelly told DKonPittsburghSports.com exclusively Thursday.

And yes, this will represent another significant increase, contrary to widespread misinformation and misrepresentation of the truth.

If you want bluster, click away. If you want facts, here you go …

The Pirates’ 40-man roster payroll for 2014, the one audited and verified by Major League Baseball’s accounting offices, was $82.1 million. While multiple other outlets were howling over payroll being in the low-$70 million range, this site informed you in the Sept. 5 Friday Insider that the actual projected figure for the full year was $82.4 million.
