News/views: Pitt bowl eligible … and so what?

Hope they at least see a Power 5 conference opponent in the bowl.

So. Would you have rather had them quit in final 2 games and finish 4-8? Because who needs the extra practices that come with the bowl game?

Good for the seniors to get a bowl. Good for the underclassmen to get a few more practices. Good for coaches to get recruits. Junk bowl or not, its overall good.

Will you still travel and cover the Converse Sneaker bowl that they get plucked to fill?

You want to be a Debbie downer fine. Pitt underachieved by a mile this year but Wanny's first 3 teams went to ZERO bowl games. Baby steps. And you better win. 9 games next year PC!

Did I just hear Brent Musberger say the ACC went 4-0 vs SEC today? I know they weren't beating the top teams. But, still.

If I were the AD at Pitt, Chryst would get one more shot next yr. I'd tell him he needs to:

A) Find a real DC over the winter;
B) Win at least 8 games before the bowl game with a more mature Voytik, seasoned OL & arguably the best 1-2 RB/WR combo in CFB;
C) Provide a plan for being more aggressive with recruiting, because they absolutely must get better talent on defense;
D) Stop coaching like he is only responsible for the offensive phase of the game.

I really like the character displayed by Chryst. When I read or hear what a quality individual he is, I totally believe it. But, it is past time for him to stop accepting the mediocre performance of this team. They can contend in the ACC on a yearly basis. But, they can't keep gift wrapping 3-4 games for the opposition every year.

While I agree the program could and arguably should do better [Akron/Duke/UNC games come to mind], but at least Chryst had the team playing extremely hard down the stretch to get to this point. Also, did you see Conner go out of his way to high five/congratulate the coach, at least to me that tells me that the players are buying into to his system and way of doing things.

I really think the way that the team closed out the regular season coupled with the extra practices that come with a bowl game [most valuable part of the bowl season], and the returning offensive talent next year should be the one where the program really turns the corner under Chryst's watch.

So what? So lets dance!

I wish Pitt was better. Playing in a junk bowl doesn't mean much in the grand scheme of things. But I'm glad the kids didn't pack it in 2 weeks ago when it would've been all too easy to have done just that. I'll take 6-6 over 4-8. Besides, one more chance to watch Boyd and Conner is worth it.

DK, leave the hater-ade in Carolina! Lol, but in all seriousness, I hope this mini-streak doesn't cover up the glaring mistakes SP has made and doesn't give him a pass. He needs to be gone. At any rate, I'm holding out hope for a Pitt-PSU New Era PinStripe Bowl. A good preview to the coming rekindling of a once great rivalry. Good work as always

DK agree it's a meaningless bowl game but let's give this team some credit for going down to Miami and winning a game very few gave them a chance to win. Also the program needs to build some momentum somewhere. If they get to a bowl and hopefully get to see a Power 5 team a win in that game gives them a boost going into 2015. This is an extremely young team and has some great offensive talent. If Chryst can get the defensive side of the ball figured out they have a real chance to challenge for that Coastal title.

My fault...u were at AJP center. Carry-On

One other note, while I tend to agree with your general premiseh here the one major difference between football and basketball is that, in basketball the all teams can practice till the end of the tournment whereas in football they can only practice until a bowl game. So with a young team [youngest in D1 I think] and a young coach, I think this helps the program as a whole tremendously.

Now, Let's hope the Pinstripe bowl comes to their senses and schedules Pitt vs PSU and really amps things up for the fans and the State of PA fans.

4-0 in the Big East. It is just not Pitt football. The whole Eastern Region just lags behind when it comes to College Football.

Aloha Bowl against Hawaii. Need to avenge that basketball loss.

Agree about meaningless bowls but 6-6 with a lineup dominated by FR and SO's is promising. You may say last year was the same but lineup had more veteran talent last year (Savage, Street, Donald, etc). Clemons is the only huge loss from this roster (and to a lesser extent Thomas). Everyone back after a 6-6 season gives legit hope for 8-4 or 9-3 next year which is huge step forward. Lineup is so young that expectations beyond 6-6 were unrealistic, though no excuse for Akron loss

Pitt stinks. Always has always will.

To be frank, I'd say this piece is applicable to another football team that plays on the same field on Sundays. How much longer does Tomlin have with these .500 finishes? Both of these teams have experienced wins that had longer odds than the average game, and others were lost that left us puzzled. Sure, the Steelers are over .500 right now, but even if they make it to a playoff round, this team will be lucky to make it past the first round if nothing changes. So the same can be asked if they make it to a playoff game; and that is, "who cares?" Maybe I'm off of the mark, but I don't feel as if I've said anything unreasonable. How much longer do men like Chryst and Tomlin have?

CBS Sports is projecting Pitt vs. Toledo in the Idaho Potato Bowl.

Dean, with the sorry system we have in place, a bowl game is the ULTIMATE ACCOMPLISHMENT REGARDLESS. STOP DENEGRATING PEOPLE. YOU SOUND LIKE A GUY WHO NEVER PLAYED BECAUSE HE SUCKED AND NOW YOUR TAKING IT OUT ON PITT

Am I the only one who thinks that any bowl game regardless of record is pointless unless it is the national championship? That is the only game I watch at the end of the year. I could care less about these other bowls where the team spent the week surfing in Florida or Hawaii. The assistant coach is coaching the game because the regular coach took the Colorado job, and then an Arkansas State comes in and beats them because they treat the game like their Super Bowl while the losing team just enjoys the vacation. Wake me up when their are actual playoffs played....... And don't claim that this 4 team beauty pageant are playoffs.
