UPDATE 2 p.m.: Away we go …

zidanesdagger: DK, assuming the Steelers do the right thing and kick LeGarrette Blount to the curb after his shameful quit-job last night, are they REALLY going to go with only Dri Archer and Le’Veon Bell for the rest of the season? Any potential targets they could sign?

DK: The fact that it’s now early afternoon and nothing has happened leads me to believe nothing will. These things tend to go pretty quickly. If Mike Tomlin was going to cut him over this, it shouldn’t have involved much deliberation.

News/Views: Pitt suspends Johnson for year

News: Pitt suspended junior forward Durand Johnson, the team’s best pure shooter, for the 2014-15 basketball season Friday evening just before its opener.

Views: No explanation was given, and the only elaboration from Jamie Dixon was that Johnson will continue be part of the program “going forward,” and he’ll still practice. I can share that I heard at the Petersen Events Center — where Pitt beat Niagara, 78-45 — that the suspension was academic at its root and that it was instigated by the university rather than the athletic program.

Dixon insisted that, even with Cam Wright out until mid-December or so with a broken foot and now Johnson gone, “We’re still good with the wings. We’ve got some options.”

Friday Insider: Bylsma had chance to change

Dan-Bylsma-2

A weekly feature rounding up a lot of randomness from a lot of time around our city’s teams …

fridayinsider• Had a fascinating conversation this week about Dan Bylsma’s final couple of years behind the Penguins’ bench, and it shed light on something I hadn’t previously understood: Why, if the people over his head were displeased with his system, did it never change?

The answer, according to one individual eminently in the know, was that Bylsma flat-out wouldn’t listen to anyone. No, not even to Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle.

The part that was most irksome to the owners was the same that seemed to irk most in the public, that being the spread-all-over-creation breakouts. Those above Bylsma recognized that the breakouts, one, stunted his own star players’ speed by having them catch passes at a standstill and, two, were laughably easy to defend when a team had time to practice it. Such as, you know, a best-of-seven playoff series.

Bylsma would occasionally be told of this dissatisfaction, and the system would be modified … but never for more than a game or two.

Some coaches really do forget that the objective is to win, not to win your way.

UPDATE 1:05 p.m.: Here we go …

Randall Alessi: I’ve heard Ben Roethlisberger and other players mention when asked about continually having issues beating obviously lesser teams how they pay no attention to that team’s current record and such. Do you buy that? If they didn’t know how bad the Jets were, they were the only ones that didn’t!

DK: They know. I think you’re blurring the line between being aware and what an opponent says publicly in the weekly run-up. Those have little in common.

That said, after asking Tomlin just now — for a second time in three days, something I usually don’t like to do — whether or not his history in losing to bad teams on the road might change anything about the preparation this week for the 2-7 Titans, I got still more about the minus-4 turnover differential. Stan Savran immediately followed up by asking if lack of preparation could have led to turnovers, and that got dismissed, too. Because, in Tomlin’s words, the offending parties were Roethlisberger and Antonio Brown, who have no trouble getting ready for any game.

I get that turnovers were huge, but I also get that 53 players had a terrible game. As did the entire coaching staff. So laying it on Ben and A.B. is quite the straw man.

UPDATE 1:13 p.m.: Sorry, a bit late. Fairly eventful morning of travel. But all ready to go now …

Dom: Cam Thomas played more than half the snaps on Sunday. Yet, he seems to have done little to warrant such major playing time. Why do the Steelers feel it is better to go with Thomas as opposed to Stephon Tuitt or Daniel McCullers?

DK: Because they’re stubborn like that, Dom. No other way to put it. No other explanation. Doesn’t take much at all to see Tuitt was a beast out there and made a significant difference, just as it doesn’t take much to see Thomas almost never does.

Column: A program running scared

“It’s hard,” James Conner was fairly whispering, followed by the most uncomfortable of pauses. “We wanted to win. We wanted this.”

If I didn’t know better, I’d swear the big man had to gulp to collect himself.

Yeah, it’s hard, all right. It’s hard to see someone like Conner lay it all on the line, level defenders left and right, run for 263 yards and three touchdowns, then forced to sit there and talk about losing as if somehow he’d done something wrong.

No. 24 Duke 51, Pitt 48.

Double overtime.

Because you can run and run and run, but it will all feel like a treadmill so long as those in charge of the University of Pittsburgh’s once-proud football program keep running scared.

UPDATE 1 p.m.: Here we go …

tonyreda8: With the Steelers’ showing this past week vs. the Colts, can you see them taking a similar approach from here on out of possessing the ball to keep their suspect defense off of the field? I feel like that may be their best approach.

DK: Well, foremost on this topic, Tony, Tomlin just stated in his press conference that there was no real tactical or philosophical switch for the Indianapolis game. To quote the coach, “It might have looked like we were more aggressive because of the way some things played out,” but he added that it had more to do with what Indianapolis gave.

Yikes, no. And I can’t imagine who falls for this stuff.
