TV: 11:35 p.m. on KDKA-TV’s ‘Sports Showdown’

Was that the per-household cost?

Yes it was DK ...

I watched for free with Periscope.

I'm perfectly happy with the sports entertainment value I received. Lots of good undercard fights, and definitely one of the better events I've watched in a long time. Floyd is a wretched person but probably the best tactical boxer I've watched in my 35 years of closely following the fight game. I don't enjoy ice hockey at all, but that doesn't mean that I get to attack (in all capital letters with 7 exclamation points) anyone who does enjoy it.

But who? Who still pays for boxing? How many people can casually name even three current professional fighters?

While clearly not anywhere near as big as it was, it's still an "event". People who wouldn't watch a boxing match if it happened in their backyard will get a group of friends together to watch the latest "fight of the century". Not me, mind you, but other suckers.

Other than the 2 guys who fought last night.... I can name the Klitschkos. Is one of those guys the heavyweight champion?

I know absolutely no one that has watched boxing since the Mike Tyson days

Boxing is thriving in the Spanish-speaking communities, which are the fastest growing demographic in our country. I'll bet, if you were in certain parts of Chicago, San Antonio, Phoenix, Miami, LA, or NYC on Saturday, you would have thought it was the World Cup that was happening. Interesting: even though it was a fight between a Filipino and an American, they also sang the Mexican national anthem prior to the fight, such is the strong interest level in the sport in that country. I appreciate that you all might not have an interest in boxing, but the suggestion that nobody else does is simply off the mark.

ESPN's Friday Night Fights, which I watch every weekend, does very solid ratings and is the Deuce's longest-running program. There are new contracts to televise fights on network TV during primetime. Even here, we have a guy named Sammy Vasquez Jr., who is quite promising and could eventually get a chance at Mayweather unless he retires. There have been several well-attended shows at the Consol over the past couple of years. Certainly not what it once was, but far, far from a dead sport.

One of the Klitschkos is heavyweight champ. The other is retired and is now the mayor of Kiev, Ukraine. An American named Deontay Wilder is a heavyweight contender with a chance. Andre Ward is an excellent super middleweight. Gennady Golovkin, a middleweight, is one of the most exciting athletes anywhere on earth. Incredible speed and tactical skills. HBO and Showtime, which are not in the business of losing money, invest heavily in the sport and show all of these athletes on a regular basis. Again, I don't watch hockey, but that doesn't mean that it doesn't exist.

Yeah, but would you pay? :)
