Nutting: Martin approach will be big-time

DEJAN KOVACEVIC, DK ON PITTSBURGH SPORTS

The Pirates plan to approach catcher Russell Martin with an extension offer that will be “beyond rational,” owner Bob Nutting just told DKonPittsburghSports.com at field level at PNC Park.

No offer has been made to this point, Nutting said, because “we want Russ focused on this.” He motioned toward the batting cage as he spoke. The Pirates and Giants are playing in the National League wild card game tonight.

News with views on the Pirates’ National League wild card workout day today at PNC Park:

• Russell Martin will play. “It’s the playoffs, man. It’ll be fine,” he said of his wonky hamstring. There’s nothing to see here. No issue at all. He’ll play.

• Chris Stewart will back up Martin. Took batting practice today. Said he had no issues. He’s the only other real injury issue, and he, too, will be no issue at all.

• The mood of the Pirates’ clubhouse came across as business-as-usual, but don’t let them fool you. That place tends to be pretty empty this time of day before most home games — meaning empty of available players — but it was anything but today. With all the national cameras and microphones on site, nearly everyone was out at their stalls, eager to be interviewed.

Steelers PATs: A performance Worilds apart

DEJAN KOVACEVIC, DK ON PITTSBURGH SPORTS

A last look at the Steelers’ last game …

Worilds

Worilds

• Jason Worilds had a tackle Sunday. Also, two quarterback hits. And no, I don’t remember any of those things happening, either. In fact, just about the only things I can remember happening for him are things that happened last season.

Remember that, when he suddenly emerged into this superlative sack machine?

You don’t need numbers to be convinced that the 2013 version of Worilds is no more, but here are some, anyway: He has nine tackles through four games, six solos and one for a sack. That means that, of his 270 snaps to date, only 3 percent have resulted in him bringing a ball-carrier to Mother Earth. He also has no forced fumbles, no passes defensed, no nothing else. Pro Football Focus ranks him eighth among the 14 NFL outside linebackers operating in 3-4 defenses who have participated in three-quarters of all defensive snaps. That’s just below average with a minus-1.2 grade.

News/views: Wait, is this good or bad for Pirates?

DEJAN KOVACEVIC, DK ON PITTSBURGH SPORTS

NEWS: The Pirates remain a game behind the Cardinals for first place in the Central Division after St. Louis falls, 5-2, to the Diamondbacks in Phoenix. A Pirates victory tomorrow coupled with a St. Louis loss would force a tiebreaker Monday at Busch Stadium.

VIEWS: Um, yay?

Be careful what you wish for, Pittsburgh. That tiebreaker game — which incidentally counts as game No. 163 — throws off the whole axis currently in play.

Steelers post 38.5 TV rating on big day

DEJAN KOVACEVIC, DK ON PITTSBURGH SPORTS

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Steelers’ 37-19 victory produced a 38.5 rating in the Pittsburgh market Sunday night, a figure that, when added to the Penguins’ huge ratings for years and the Pirates’ growing ratings of late, underscores the remarkable grip sports have on our region.

On the same day the Steelers produced a 38.5, the Pirates’ victory against the Brewers had a 9.6 on Root Sports, roughly one-quarter the size but well above average for the ball club and all the more impressive considering NFL games were on two other networks. On Saturday night, the Pirates had a season-high 13.0 rating, including surprisingly good showings in the younger demographics.

Steelers PATs: Success with a price

DEJAN KOVACEVIC, DK ON PITTSBURGH SPORTS

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A last look at the Steelers’ last game …

A bunch of players were hurt in a game in which the team as a whole went full-throttle, which probably isn’t a coincidence. And which probably, in its own weird way, is a positive.

Late Sunday night, Jarvis Jones was walking out of the locker room with his wrist in a cast and his face as long as the hallway ahead.

“That’s the price you gotta pay,” he told me.

And he’s right. That’s not to suggest the Steelers would do well to lose more than a quarter of their starting defense each week, but it seems a fair point to underscore. There have been far too many games over the past two seasons-plus where there wasn’t nearly enough pain.

• Updating all those injuries: Jones’ wrist likely will require surgery, though a prognosis is unknown. Ryan Shazier has a sprained MCL in his knee. That will need more evaluation, as well. And Ike Taylor’s broken forearm, surgically repaired today, shouldn’t have anyone assuming he’ll be back, even with the modified injured reserve that allows a player to resume practicing after Week 6, playing after Week 8. It’s asking an awful lot.

News/views: Golden sunrise for Penguins’ camp

DEJAN KOVACEVIC, DK ON PITTSBURGH SPORTS

News with views from the Penguins’ opening of training camp, Friday at Consol Energy Center:

• Sidney Crosby skated, and I could pretty much end this little report right here. The captain was held out of the sprints that had absolutely everyone winded, even Kris Letang. But he did take a regular turn in drills, and yes, he was mostly with Pascal Dupuis and Chris Kunitz.

“Hopefully, it’s not something I’ll have to miss any time with,” Crosby said of his injury without divulging it. “It’s something I’ve got to be smart with, but yeah, if I get the OK, I’ll be out there.”

That includes Saturday’s practices that are open to the public.

• Check out Dupuis looking all gassed — again, everyone did — in that red sweater:

Dupuis’ sweater meant no one was allowed to check him, but he still managed to get a good shot on Simon Despres at one point. By accident, of course. “We got tangled up,” No. 9 said with a wink.

NEWS: Paul Chryst spoke about Pitt’s offense being capable of an upgrade, all the bodacious numbers aside, at his weekly press conference Monday on the South Side. Even the running game, which has averaged, um, 344.4 yards.

VIEWS: Well, yeah.

Because, as Chryst tried to put it carefully in respecting the three teams over whom the Panthers have run roughshod: “The numbers are misleading on a lot of things. We can be cleaner. We can do a better job of the receivers blocking, we can do a better job getting through the second level, getting on our pulls. I mean, there are a lot of things we can get better at in the run game.”

Exclusive: Teke has successful heart transplant

DEJAN KOVACEVIC, DK ON PITTSBURGH SPORTS

Tekulve

Kent Tekulve, the closer for the Pirates’ World Series champions in 1979 and popular analyst on their current games for Root Sports, had a heart transplant Sept. 5 and is “feeling surprisingly great right now,” he told me Monday night.

Details of the transplant are expected to be made public at a Tuesday press conference by the Pirates, Root and Allegheny General Hospital.

Tekulve, 67, had a heart episode on Christmas Eve 2013 that he described as “the heart basically quitting on me.” A pump was installed shortly thereafter, and in April, he was placed on the heart transplant list. Earlier this summer, he and Root agreed he would take a break from his duties as postgame studio commentator and, at the time, he asked for privacy and did not divulge his condition.

“The pump was never designed to be a lifelong thing,” Tekulve said. “It was a bridge to a heart replacement.”

Steelers PATs: At least there was Le’Veon

DEJAN KOVACEVIC, DK ON PITTSBURGH SPORTS

BALTIMORE — Having buried the local football club about 6 1/2 feet deep in the column filed late last night from M&T Bank Stadium, thought I’d dig even deeper for anything remotely resembling a positive.

Yeah, I know, right?

Well, I was able to come up with Le’Veon Bell. Not just for the 59 yards he picked up over 11 carries. Not for the five catches for 48 yards, a wonderful average of 9.6 per play. Not even for the breathtaking patience he continues to exhibit, highlighted by this beauty of a 21-yard sprint into the Baltimore backfield. When you watch this video, do so the first time isolating on Bell, and the second time isolating on Heath Miller, who slashes across to his left to set the pivotal block.

Good stuff. But still not what I want to discuss.
