Column: Packing up Penguins’ pluses, minuses

VANCOUVER, British Columbia — “Ugh,” Brandon Sutter was saying, or something that sounded suspiciously like that. “Nothing there. Just nothing. Maybe the first 10 minutes.”

Yeah, maybe not even that.

Canucks 5, Penguins 0.

And it wasn’t anywhere near that close.

The visitors looked fatigued, frustrated and — let’s face it — they played lousy on top of all that. It made for one seriously flat finish to a Western Canada trip that opened Wednesday with a take-care-of-business shutout of the awful Oilers and peaked Friday with a full-throttle shutout of the contending Flames.

9:57 p.m.: Neither Bennett nor Harrington will play. They’re the scratches again. Weird. Johnston really went out of his way to make it sound like they would.

CALGARY, Alberta — Marc-Andre Fleury carved another slice of franchise history with his eighth shutout, this on 21 saves in the Penguins’ 4-0 snuffing of the Flames Friday night at Scotiabank Saddledome.

“I’m proud of it,” Fleury said afterward. “It’s a good feeling.”

No doubt, but the best feeling among the visitors?

Sidney Crosby scored two sensational goals, on a one-handed tip off the rush and on a partial-break rocket past Jonas Hiller.

“I felt good,” the captain said. “It felt nice to get rewarded.”

IMG_2138

Again, no doubt. But the best feeling of all?

Be very certain that belonged singularly to one seriously beleaguered Chris Kunitz, he of the three primary assists, relentless wheels and exceptional puck decisions.

News/views: Penguins pushing Bennett hard

Beau Bennett will be scratched tonight in Calgary for a second consecutive game. — GETTY

BY DEJAN KOVACEVIC

CALGARY, Alberta — For what the Penguins announced would be an optional skate this morning at Scotiabank Saddledome, it sure wasn’t optional for Beau Bennett. He remained on the ice even after the injured players, the backup goaltender and the coaches.

That signified two things, both meaningful:

• He won’t dress tonight against the Flames, marking a second consecutive healthy scratch, a scenario few would have thought possible not so long ago.

• The coaches are doing more than sending a message.

IMG_2138

This was Mike Johnston’s explanation, given while Bennett was still on the ice: “We wanted to spend some time working with him on the ice, so we spent some time working with him. And then there’s the thing where your team is playing well and you’ve got to make a change if you’re going to bring him back in the lineup. We want to develop Beau. He’s a good, young player. He’s going to be a big part of our organization. Part of that development is getting him some extra work on the ice.”

Interview: Deryk Engelland, Flames

BY DEJAN KOVACEVIC

CALGARY, Alberta — Deryk Engelland, now a defenseman for the Flames, spent half a decade with the Penguins before signing a three-year, $8.7 million contract through free agency that stunned much of the hockey world for its scope in an era where the enforcer is fading.

I interviewed Engelland this morning at the Scotiabank Saddledome, and we covered several topics, including changes he’s noticed in his former team.

Friday Insider: ‘Time running low’ for trade plan

Calgary Flames v Pittsburgh Penguins

Blake Comeau scores in the Penguins’ Dec. 12 win over Calgary. He’s due back next week. — GETTY

BY DEJAN KOVACEVIC

CALGARY, Alberta — Roundup of a lot of randomness from a lot of time around our teams …

• The NHL trade deadline is March 2, which is almost a month away and, yet, far too close for the Penguins’ comfort, if one asks Jim Rutherford.

“Time’s running low,” the GM was telling me yesterday as part of a wide-ranging conversation we had on the state of the team. “If you think about it, we’ve really only got a couple of weeks.”

Couple of weeks rather than a month?

“We need to see what we’ve got.”

fridayinsider

That made immediate sense. Because as Rutherford went on to explain, management’s foremost priority as it relates to the deadline is to find out if they’ve already got the top-six wingers they need. And that, of course, means waiting on Blake Comeau, who should be back in action next week.

Column: No defenseman, no story touches Letang

Pittsburgh Penguins v Edmonton Oilers

BY DEJAN KOVACEVIC

EDMONTON, Alberta — Kris Letang had a choice.

Check that: He used to have a choice. Now, it’s been decided in advance.

It was the third period of the Penguins’ thorough 2-0 shutout of the Oilers on Thursday night at Rexall Place, and that two-goal lead was being protected when Edmonton’s Oscar Klefbom pushed up ice on a possible break. And every instinct of nearly every defenseman at every level of hockey in that precise situation is to backpedal. Glide back, get the stick out, survey the scene for others joining the rush.

IMG_2138

So just for fun, as the visitors were hurriedly packing their bags for the brief flight south to Calgary ahead of the foot of snow expected here overnight, I posed this question to the increasingly great No. 58: What would the Letang of last season had done?
