Column: Top 10 takeaways of Steelers’ preseason

DEJAN KOVACEVIC, DK ON PITTSBURGH SPORTS

At 7:33 p.m. Thursday, a helmetless Ben Roethlisberger strode casually to Heinz Field’s 50-yard line decal for the coin toss between the Steelers and Panthers. And as he did, Carolina countered by sending out all five of its captains, side by side, presumably to outweigh Ben in the karma category, possibly because … well, what the hey, it’s the fourth week of the NFL preseason and someone might as well pretend that something from what’s about to happen will actually matter.

Ben, to his considerable credit, escaped the pile by correctly calling heads.

That’s as good as it got, I swear.

Column: What’s so ‘special’ about Jarvis Jones?

DEJAN KOVACEVIC, DK ON PITTSBURGH SPORTS

Jarvis Jones is a special talent, but don’t take my word for it. And for heaven’s sake, don’t trust what your eyes tell you.

No, just re-roll the tape from the evening of April 25, 2013, when the Steelers made Jones the 17th overall pick in the NFL draft, and Kevin Colbert and Mike Tomlin spoke jointly at a press conference about how Jones was one of the 6-8 “special players in the draft.” And they were just clearing their throats.

From Colbert …

“He’s a great player.”

“He plays the run, he chases the ball, and most important he gets after the passer.”

“It’s really just a great honor to have this kid joining our team.”

From Tomlin …

“It really was a fun and easy evaluation.”

“He plays the game with a certain disposition, with a certain demeanor we value. If he’s making a tackle or fronting a block, he’s doing it in a manner we appreciate. He’ll fit in with our group.”

“We’re just very thankful and very excited to have Jarvis.”

All that was missing was angels playing harps.

Tuesday 12 Qs: Le’Veon, Neal, Wing, Kirk, Niko

DEJAN KOVACEVIC, DK ON PITTSBURGH SPORTS

photoWelcome to Tuesday Twelve Qs, our chat that takes place each week at 1 p.m. live from the Steelers’ headquarters on the South Side.

The format is simple: Use the comment section below to submit an entry, no more than one per person. Submit it anytime you want. I’ll pick from those to get the thing rolling, then monitor new entries as we move along.

All topics welcome, as always.

UPDATE 1 p.m.: OK, away we go …

Josh: Very interested to see how the Steelers handle Le’Veon Bell and LeGarrette Blount, considering Santonio Holmes in the past. Do you think they will act on the matter before the NFL does? The NFL process is very drawn out.

Friday Insider: What had Troy so hot?

DEJAN KOVACEVIC, DK ON PITTSBURGH SPORTS

PHILADELPHIA — A weekly feature aimed at rounding up a whole lot of odds and ends from a whole lot of time spent around our local teams …

• Apparently, TV only caught a moment of Troy Polamalu getting heated on the Steelers’ sideline Thursday night in the loss to the Eagles, but I’ve since heard from witness that it was really, really passionate at one point.

Below is a shot taken by DKonPittsburghSports.com subscriber Greg Conn from his seats at Lincoln Financial Field. It’s after the fact, but you can see the defense off to the left and Polamalu kind of being held off at the right …

Column: Which Standard is The Standard?

DEJAN KOVACEVIC, DK ON PITTSBURGH SPORTS

PHILADELPHIA — So wait, which Standard is The Standard?

Because if it’s true what Mike Tomlin’s been saying all these years, what’s now sculpted in sterling silver outside the Steelers’ home locker room, that The Standard is The Standard, then someone seriously needs to square that up with Le’Veon Bell and LeGarrette Blount being arrested on a Wednesday, then sent right out into action on a Thursday.

Oh, for real.

Bell and Blount, both taken into custody by Ross Township police for marijuana possession and, in Bell’s case, driving under the influence, were full participants in that 31-21 preseason loss to the Eagles: Bell took the opening two handoffs, no less, and wound up with eight carries for 18 yards. Blount had six carries for 26 yards. Both played well into the fourth quarter.

It was astonishing.

Interview: Steve McLendon, Steelers

DEJAN KOVACEVIC, DK ON PITTSBURGH SPORTS

Be patient with Big Mac.

Steve McLendon speaks in a hushed, reserved tone, which might give off the initial impression he doesn’t have much to say. It isn’t so. The Steelers’ nose tackle is as introspective as anyone I’ve encountered on the roster. He’s imaginative in his preparation, once having turned to ballet as part of his workouts. He’s intense. And he’s supremely determined to be the man who succeeds — in every sense of the term — Casey Hampton.

Give him a chance. I think you’ll like what he had to say in this three-minute chat the other day on the South Side. And pay no mind to that ruffling sound. He was taping his fingers the entire time.

I’m traveling to Philadelphia today for tonight’s 7:30 kickoff with the Eagles. I’ll have full coverage, including a column, from there.

Column: Bell, Blount already guilty … of idiocy

DEJAN KOVACEVIC, DK ON PITTSBURGH SPORTS

Idiots. Both of them. Just idiots.

All kinds of justification is sure to follow the dual arrest of the Steelers’ two running backs, Le’Veon Bell and LeGarrette Blount, by Ross Township police Wednesday, with both facing charges of marijuana possession and, in Bell’s case, driving under the influence. The news was broken by Colin Dunlap of 93.7 The Fan.

I don’t want to hear any of that justification.

I don’t want to hear that Blount was some bad influence on Bell, even though he comes with a checkered past that included this infamous punch thrown during a college game. Because I’ve gotten to know Bell and, as such, I know he’s plenty smart enough to be capable of thinking for himself. Instead of being an idiot. He didn’t need to get all buddy-buddy, as was described in our Friday Insider feature here last week, with a guy who could get him in trouble.

News with views: Gilbert’s payday too early?

DEJAN KOVACEVIC, DK ON PITTSBURGH SPORTS

News with views related to your Pittsburgh Steelers …

• Marcus Gilbert’s five-year, $30 million extension, announced Tuesday afternoon, comes as at least a small surprise.

Sure, Kevin Colbert had identified Gilbert as one of his targets for a possible extension this preseason — along with Shaun Suisham (done), Jason Worilds and Cortez Allen — but there figured to be more to the situation with Gilbert, given his inconsistent past. Also, everyone — and I do mean everyone — inside the camp knew Gilbert had prepared himself like never before, fully aware this was to be his contract year.

Now, you can say big deal, whatever it takes. But bear in mind that carrot is now gone, if it really was money that was Gilbert’s primary motivator.

Tuesday 12 Qs: Shazier, Manfred, Hayes, Wing

UPDATE 1 p.m.: OK, Mike Tomlin just spoke with us here in his press conference room, and I was able to get downstairs to the locker room for about 15 minutes of material from the athletes.

And off we go …

Kevin: It’s only two games, but the Steelers looked quite different than the past two years. The speed from Ryan Shazier along with Stephon Tuitt, Sean Spence and Mike Mitchell really makes the defense look stronger. If the O-line is improved, as well, then what are realistic expectations for the 2014 Steelers?

Steelers PATs: Go ahead, lay it on the line

DEJAN KOVACEVIC, DK ON PITTSBURGH SPORTS

One last look at the Steelers’ last game …

• The fast guys stole the show in the 19-16 preseason victory over Buffalo on Saturday, but the slowest guys set the stage: Ben Roethlisberger went almost untouched in his quarter-plus of action, and that was almost entirely due to a rejuvenated, all-pistons-firing offensive line.

As Roethlisberger put it, “I think they did a heck of a job. They kept me clean. I don’t have any stains on my pants, so that’s good.”

He didn’t have any in East Rutherford the previous week, either, though that was different. By design, it turns out.

Kelvin Beachum was telling me after this game that the offensive plan was to run one week, with hardly any no-huddle, then throw this week, exclusively out of the no-huddle. And the biggest adjustment, of course, had to be made by the beef up front.
