Ugh … trying again with comments 82
DEJAN KOVACEVIC, DK ON PITTSBURGH SPORTS
My apologies in advance for this, but I’ve had to flip the switch back to basic WordPress comments. That means the Livefyre comments just go poof, unfortunately, and the only ones that remain from the past couple days were those done on the app.
Always trying to let you know everything that’s going on with the site, so here it is:
• I became instantly smitten with Livefyre. That was a mistake. It greatly slowed down the page, it had a separate and confusing login system, and — get this — they asked for $36,000 a year to integrate their platform with our app. So wow, no. See ya.
Again, that’s on me. Failed on due diligence.
• I’m taking this mistake and making the best of it. Because our new plan is to go with the most reliable, fastest, least intrusive platform of all, that being basic WordPress. You’ll have no extra questions asked, no extra login, nothing of the kind. That will be the foundation.
It’s ugly. But that can and will be remedied. In fact, Brisk Mobile, the world-class builder of our app — whom I should have called in the first place — will be handling that and the new commenting integration into the app. It will be one big, happy — and yes, really pretty — platform.
• I don’t have a timetable, but I’m assured it won’t take long. We’ll add in some of the features you liked on Livefyre, too. It won’t just be the bland contraption you’ll see in the short term.
Thank you for your support, and apologies again. I want this site to be the best in the city of its kind, and I got a little too excited too quickly this time.
Now, we’re going to get it right.
I’ll take any questions at all that you might have down in comments.

Nov 26, 2014 @ 13:46:44
And to emphasize from above, I’ll answer EVERY question on this topic in this space. Might actually be cathartic for how stupid I’m feeling this afternoon.
Nov 26, 2014 @ 16:54:54
Live and learn, right?
Nov 26, 2014 @ 13:51:47
At least you learned. I can’t count the number of clients and websites that use a new service and stick with it because they put time and effort into it, even though scrapping it would be the best call.
Nov 26, 2014 @ 13:56:05
No complains about either swtich. Just one non-related question: what about the Morning Java videos?
Nov 26, 2014 @ 14:02:00
I did the one on Giancarlo Stanton and hated it. Audio was bad, lighting was worse. We’ve bought some equipment to address that, and we’re hoping to do a good one next Wednesday.
Nov 26, 2014 @ 14:06:00
Did you buy a wireless microphone ? That should fix it.
Nov 26, 2014 @ 14:08:03
Yeah, it’s Bluetooth. Had it in Sochi, actually. If it worked there …
Nov 26, 2014 @ 14:19:03
Dont’ forget the tripod!
Nov 26, 2014 @ 14:04:40
Hang in there, it’s no big deal here. I love change.
Nov 26, 2014 @ 14:04:52
we all learn from mistakes it is great that you correcting the problem
Nov 26, 2014 @ 14:06:14
NEVER once thought of criticism for trying to make our interaction better. Just keep trying until you get it right——that will make us most happy. Maybe you and Dali could personally deliver the columns and tidbits directly to our doors, like Sid delivers season tickets.
Nov 26, 2014 @ 14:06:23
I don’t understand how anyone could even make a gripe about anything. We came for the outstanding writing and perspective. Everything else, to me, is secondary. These things will work out in time, and you’ll never see me frustrated with the site. Happy Thanksgiving!
Nov 26, 2014 @ 14:10:05
Oh, I wasn’t suggesting anyone would or should complain. Just stating that I was doing plenty enough of that on my own. I’m a big believer in presenting readers with a CONSISTENT product. Not predictable but consistent in the way it’s presented and — above all — the way it’s used. I blew it here. I’ll fix it.
Nov 26, 2014 @ 14:10:42
Glad to hear this; I did not like the new system all that much.
Dont sweat it, DK. It’s OK to make a mistake as long as you learn from it.
Nov 26, 2014 @ 14:15:04
Growing pains – no big whoop.
Nov 26, 2014 @ 15:15:18
My thoughts exactly…..growing pains, no big whoop!
Nov 26, 2014 @ 14:20:41
Unacceptable. Your Director of Social Media better be on the chopping block. Run this up the chain to your superiors.
Nov 26, 2014 @ 14:22:31
Ha! You laugh, old friend, but what you don’t know yet is that I actually did fire myself from this role today. For good. Announcement forthcoming.
Nov 26, 2014 @ 14:22:24
I (almost) never comment, so from that standpoint I have no opinion. What impresses me, though, is your overall approach to this venture, and your willingness to admit when you make a mistake and explain why. You’ve shown that you’re dedicated to getting it right, and kudos to you for what you’ve built. Count me as a satisfied customer! Continued success, and happy Thanksgiving!
Nov 26, 2014 @ 15:57:34
Agreed.
Nov 26, 2014 @ 14:24:36
One impression I do want to make while on the topic of comments: I’d LOVE to see more people using avatars. Any avatars you create now WILL hold up in the new system, since it’s all being built on WordPress. Those can be found at https://en.gravatar.com/ … It’s easy, too, and it sticks with you. No strings attached.
Nov 26, 2014 @ 14:32:49
And don’t forget that they carry, too, to other systems that use Gravatar. And there’s a ton of them out there!
Nov 26, 2014 @ 14:27:42
Happy for your fabulous start and to be a small part of it.
Nov 26, 2014 @ 14:39:34
DK- no need to apologize. The site is already the best because it is you. You keep writing and the lunatic nation will keep reading. Seriously, I don’t know how you have the energy to do everything you’ve been doing since starting this new venture.
On a slightly different note, I never could find a link to your Point Park talk. Thought it might be interesting to read since I took a summer sports journalism class at Point Park when I was considering a journalism major before I enrolled. Went into accounting instead!
Nov 26, 2014 @ 14:59:51
Haven’t heard from them yet. I’ll ask tonight at Consol.
Nov 26, 2014 @ 14:42:37
Again I would suggest integrating a message board. It would allow for lengthier and more in depth discussion on more varying topics while allowing the comments section to remain short and on topic.
Nov 26, 2014 @ 14:47:12
I was confused as comments from the app didn’t show in full browser sessions
Keep up the writing the rest will follow
Nov 26, 2014 @ 14:58:47
This explains that, I hope. All that is reconnected RIGHT NOW. All working.
Nov 26, 2014 @ 14:49:20
Building an empire, a dynasty, new business, the best website in the city ect, requires some growing pains! We are with you, support you, and thank you for your candidness with all that you do. Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours D K, and all fellow readers!
Nov 26, 2014 @ 14:49:24
Oh well…easy come, easy go…and I don’t have to put a space between my name and “22” to be me again. All is well!
Nov 26, 2014 @ 14:56:40
Lovely Karen,
May the Thanksgiving turkey bring you everything on your list.
Nov 26, 2014 @ 14:57:53
Every user will be able to use any username they wish. No such thing as duplicates.
Nov 26, 2014 @ 16:05:11
Groatie – All that was on my list was my new little Grandson – and he’s here! Major blessing happened on Nov. 14th. You have a beauteous Thanksgiving, too!
Nov 27, 2014 @ 12:19:49
Karen, November 14th is a great Birthday!!!!!
Take it from me!
Nov 26, 2014 @ 15:05:25
No worries! now I MUST get an avatar! btw what’s an avatar
Nov 26, 2014 @ 15:15:10
DK, I sold leading edge design automation technology. I would go out of my way to set the proper expectations and emphatically advise my customers to expect minor hiccups and that this was normal. With lightning fast response and open and honest communications, my customers technical issues were quickly addressed and promptly solved. In the end, they were way better off than if they never had invested in the technology and they were very grateful. You are approaching these unexpected issues on your website in the same manner and we are all better off for your courage to breakout on your own. Happy Thanksgiving!
Nov 26, 2014 @ 15:39:15
Not sure how much it matters, but i read a few other blogs/news sites that use Disqus and it seems to work pretty seamless, and sends me update(at my request) when people comment on on my remarks. Sounds like you might have it figured out, but if looking at other options it works well on the user end from my perspective
Nov 26, 2014 @ 15:43:33
Now, if you can get the 12-hour clock back, you’ll have it nailed. It’s hard for us older folk to add 12 to everything.
Nov 26, 2014 @ 16:32:56
Instead of “older folks” are you sure you don’t mean “Kentucky folks?”
“I can’t find the 15 on my watch, Ma!! You got one?!””
Nov 26, 2014 @ 18:43:39
Nov 26, 2014 @ 15:57:26
I love technology as much as the next nerd (and it is my life) but…”Technological progress has merely provided us with more efficient means for going backwards”
Aldous Huxley
Keep up the good fight my friend…
Nov 26, 2014 @ 16:25:08
I am sure everything will work out.
Nov 26, 2014 @ 16:29:05
Testing new avatar…
Nov 26, 2014 @ 19:05:30
Looking good!!
Nov 26, 2014 @ 16:32:37
Can’t exactly explain it, but much of the enjoyment of your adventure in electronic journalism is a sense of community and in being part of its success.
Nov 26, 2014 @ 16:36:55
DK, strange but I find much of the enjoyment in participating in your entrepreneurial adventure in electronic journalism is the sense of community and partnership. We’re with you. Excelsior, dude!!
Nov 26, 2014 @ 16:42:05
I’m glad you ditched Livefyre. Frankly, I HATED having to login and log off twice every day. (I’m the type that logs off when I finish reading from the site. Just my way.) Add to that: I noticed a HUGE slowdown of the site a couple of days ago that lasted well over 24 hours. So much so that I powered down and rebooted both my computer and router at one point. Nothing changed. I never thought about it being Livefyre. And for that they want $36K? Thanks for being candid. Every improvement you try to make to the site will have risks. Never be afraid to go back to something that worked better.
Nov 26, 2014 @ 17:17:36
I was wondering why it slowed to a crawl. Had me checking my wifi connection! Phew!
Nov 26, 2014 @ 17:28:45
Yeah, me, too.
Nov 26, 2014 @ 17:56:12
Growing pains DK. Understandable.
Nov 26, 2014 @ 18:21:10
So you talked me into the avatar thing.
Nov 26, 2014 @ 18:21:20
Hey. That’s part of the growth process. You don’t need to apologize. I’m just glad to be part of this site. It’s DK on Pittsburgh sports but your integration with subscribers make it a community.
Keep up the good work. Remember…its a process.
Cheers!
Nov 26, 2014 @ 18:29:51
You have been doing this for 3 months DK. The tech glitches were expected. The content has been outstanding. All that matters. Have a happy Thanksgiving!!!
Nov 26, 2014 @ 18:53:32
Avatar, Epstein! Now, man! Do it!
Nov 26, 2014 @ 19:18:34
Whatever you say, Mr Kotter!
Nov 26, 2014 @ 18:48:06
The fact that there’s any discussion on this at all makes it feel like we’re part of a big lunatic family. Family forgives, right?
Nov 26, 2014 @ 18:48:31
Honestly, I’d rather have this than the Livefyre thing. Most of us need editors. Few of us have them. This format serves as an editor. A rather arbitrary one, but better than having expositions, rants and links scattered from here to Chicago. Just my opinion…
Nov 26, 2014 @ 18:56:28
I’m here and reading DK’s words of wisdom. I’m happy fish. Everything else is gravy.
Speaking of gravy – Happy Thanksgiving to all. And GOD Bless our troops in harms’ way.
Nov 26, 2014 @ 19:06:05
I recall that even the Emperor Chaz lost a game in the 1970s now and again ……… We’re here for ya, man!!
Nov 26, 2014 @ 19:17:03
You say this is wordpress? The font is so much more readable than the original system, and it just looks much cleaner overall. You must have gotten the new and improved WP–congrats! The only thing I like about livefyre is that you can “like” a post (with no dislike option) and you could see who the posters were that gave the thumbs up. A minor quibble though, and it will force us to actually comment on a post instead of clicking an icon! Anyway, here’s to your continued success and I hope you and family have a great Turkey Day!
Nov 26, 2014 @ 19:23:40
There WILL be a Like button. This is NOT the finished product or even close. This is a placeholder.
Nov 26, 2014 @ 19:48:44
It all looks good, but I’m very easily impressed & distracted. Have a very Happy Thanksgiving everyone.
Nov 26, 2014 @ 20:33:38
Dejan – In the start up community we refer to this course correction as a “Pivot” That’s the awesome thing about an Agile Start up. You have motivated me to add an avitar. I agree with the other posters that we value your GREAT content. The Insider pieces and player interviews are absolutely terrific. Awesome to hear that one of your colleagues in another market is motivated to do a site like yours. We need great journalists like you. Thanks for doing the profession proud!!!
Nov 26, 2014 @ 21:02:28
Appreciate that, Andy. Not seeing the avi, though!
Nov 26, 2014 @ 20:56:28
This is completely unacceptable. I was going to make a compilation of all of my brilliantly constructed posts and now… POOF?
Nov 26, 2014 @ 20:57:27
Good job Dejan. If something isn’t working the way you want it to. Move on. Better than sticking it out for prides sake.
Nov 26, 2014 @ 21:10:32
Dejan, thank you for truly making this one big lunatic family by keeping us updated on the site changes and keeping our opinions in mind when you make decisions.
I honestly don’t think that you have anything to apologize for, these things come along with new technology. Every OS releases patches (some before the original is released) because tech never works the way you want it to. And that’s not what we’re all here for anyway. It’s your excellent writing.
The exciting part is being here for all of this. It’s actually great to watch the site grow!
Nov 26, 2014 @ 21:11:26
Oh, back to JAL I go. I did not break the Livefyre system
Nov 26, 2014 @ 21:24:34
Not much is easy with technology it seems!
Nov 26, 2014 @ 21:44:06
A thousand thank yous for ditching livefyre. I can’t join social media with the exception of twitter, and I wasn’t going to “register” for livefyre. Glad to be able to comment again. Keep up the good work, and BTW sometimes it just doesn’t pay to be an “early adopter”!
Stuart
Nov 26, 2014 @ 21:53:45
There will be no social media connections, no extra login with the new platform.
Nov 26, 2014 @ 21:46:28
Hi DK. I would love to see a Pirates player blog exclusively on DK on Pittsburgh Sports. If you could find a willing Bucco, would you ever consider the idea? Keep up the awesome work and Happy Thanksgiving!
Nov 26, 2014 @ 22:19:04
Hey there.
Cool with whatever direction you decide on take with this epic adventure. Was a bit concerned that there seemed to be such a big disconnect between the app and the website. But all is well whatever way you go. Guess I am one of those DK lemmings in that regard!
Thanks and gobble gobble!
Randy in RVA.
Nov 26, 2014 @ 22:37:55
If livefyre is what was dogging the site i am glad to see it go. Didnt like the extra log in or having to alter my ultra original posting name. Now all I have to do is figure out how to delete that livefyre account…
Nov 26, 2014 @ 23:03:01
Teething troubles – no biggie DK. Look at it this way – you haven’t made any bad hires, which are a lot worse than an iffy software platform. And believe me, I have had a few hires that made me shudder so I know!
Nov 27, 2014 @ 02:22:32
Hurrah! I can turn off third-party cookies again!
Nov 27, 2014 @ 02:34:53
DK I am looking forward to watching the Point Park talk. I am also a Point Park alumnus with a degree in accounting. I spent a year as a journalism major before going into accounting. Every new business will have bumps in the road. Keep up the great work. Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
Nov 27, 2014 @ 09:05:11
Not to worry at all about the comments. I bet I’m not alone – any chance someone here could provide a quick primer on creating an avatar? I apologize for my Luddite-ness. Happy Thanksgivin’!
Nov 27, 2014 @ 09:18:45
Testing avatar.
Nov 28, 2014 @ 11:11:43
so I can delete that Livefyre from my Facebook
Nov 28, 2014 @ 11:15:28
Yes.
Nov 29, 2014 @ 00:23:21
I, for one, am very happy to see Livefyre disappear!
