Steelers PATs: Burned secondary, burned cash

DEJAN KOVACEVIC, DK ON PITTSBURGH SPORTS

CLEVELAND — These words, minus the one in brackets, came from the mouth of Mike Mitchell: “When we did what we were supposed to do, we kicked their [behinds]. They got us on a couple trick plays that really hurt us and got their momentum going.”

Which begs the obvious question. And no, not the one that asks who Mitchell is.

I’m talking about this one: Is there anyone on these Steelers that doesn’t subscribe to the theory that flying the plane successfully comes with the same value as landing it successfully?

My goodness.

Pittsburgh Steelers v Cleveland Browns

CLEVELAND — When will Ben Roethlisberger blow his top?

And really, why hasn’t he done so already?

I’m left with a litany of questions, criticisms and outright kicks to the teeth for how miserably the Steelers performed Sunday in this 31-10 throttling by the Browns at FirstEnergy Stadium, from Mike Tomlin’s preparation to Todd Haley’s comical offensive playcalling to Dick LeBeau’s defense … well, having its own top blown off twice … to pretty much all 53 players.

This was flat-out sickening in nearly every facet.

It was Tampa times 10, London times 11, getting Tebowed by 12. Because at least that last one happened in the playoffs, a plateau this team might not revisit for another decade at this pace.

As Brett Keisel bluntly put it, “We took one on the chin today.”

From the Browns, no less.

And yet, even among all that misery, nothing sore-thumbed its way through quite like the incongruous ineptitude of the Haley offense, which turned out 359 total yards but checked out yet again — 0 for 3 — in the red zone. There was no rhythm, no rhyme to what they did, and the Steelers now, remarkably, rank fourth in the NFL in total yardage and 26th in red-zone offense.

Friday Insider: Consol ice mystery solved?

DEJAN KOVACEVIC, DK ON PITTSBURGH SPORTS

fridayinsiderA weekly feature aimed at rounding up a whole lot of odds and ends from a whole lot of time spent around our local teams …

• Just a couple weeks ago, some of the Penguins’ players and even coaches were calling the Consol Energy Center ice some of the worst they’d ever experienced at the NHL level.

So imagine my surprise late Thursday night when I raised the topic anew with a couple guys in the locker room, and they were fairly singing about the stuff.

“The ice was great,” Marc-Andre Fleury told me.

“Really nice,” Pascal Dupuis would echo a bit later.

Parsing the words of professional coaches and athletes, even the polished executives, is almost always a fool’s errand. These people are quoted more often than the president, and yet they’re not at all trained in public speaking, nor are they remotely prepared in their remarks.

That said, I’m about to parse Ben Roethlisberger, and brazenly so, if only because I’ve long believed that’s the best way to get to the bottom of what’s really churning underneath that helmet.

This was his response today, before the Steelers’ practice on the South Side, when I rather bluntly asked if this offense behaved at its most aggressive in that magical first half of the season opener against the Browns:

Welcome to Tuesday 12 Qs, our chat that takes place at 2 p.m. and offers you a chance to dictate the discussion.

The format is simple: Use the comments section below to submit an entry, with no more than one per person, please. Submit it early if you prefer — I’ll be up at Consol covering the Penguins’ practice — and I’ll pick from those to get the thing rolling, then monitor new entries once we go live.

With the opener coming Thursday, hockey’s a hot topic, but all topics are welcome, as always.

JC Steel: DK, I sense a theme in your Steelers’ columns that the coaches are not taking advantage of the player talent at their disposal. It seems to me that the coaches are forcing all players into their systems, rather than fitting the systems to the players. How can that be fixed?

DK: New coaches. Or the same coaches but far less tied to the past or their ideal of what the Steelers should look like rather than what they do look like.

Steelers PATs: A jumped route? Is that legal?

DEJAN KOVACEVIC, DK ON PITTSBURGH SPORTS

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — What made Brice McCain’s decisive pick-six stand out in the Steelers’ 17-9 victory Sunday over the Jaguars wasn’t just that it was that rarest of rare sightings for the local franchise — defensive points! — it’s the unbridled aggressiveness with which they came.

I mean, McCain jumped a route.

When is the last time anyone in the Pittsburgh secondary just brazenly jumped a route, even a precarious sideline route such as the one Allen Hurns tried and failed with a slip?

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The scoreboard doesn’t lie, right?

And if any scoreboard actually were capable of getting away with a lie, it sure wouldn’t be here. Not with the world’s two largest scoreboards having been installed this summer at EverBank Field, one at either end, each absolutely towering above the place at 360 feet long, 60 feet tall.

So, let’s start there: Steelers 17, Jaguars 9

No lie.

But neither was it a lie in the immediate aftermath when Ben Roethlisberger, sporting a delightful pinstriped lavender suit that was anything but a happy match for his pained expression, spoke these five simple words: “We need to get better.”

And then, after a momentary pause: “That includes me. I need to get better.”

Ain’t that the truth?

Say what you will about the defense bouncing back from the Tampa Bay debacle and at least doing the job against legitimately promising Blake Bortles and the young Jaguars. Brice McCain’s pick-six was the decisive dagger. Cortez Allen, back to competence after a bungling game against the Bucs, had his own interception, seven tackles and three passes defensed. Jason Worilds, back from … I don’t know … the astral realm, recorded a sack and bullied Bortles all day. Lawrence Timmons was everywhere. Brett Keisel had a huge pass block late. They weren’t alone.

Friday Insider: Open mind, spot for Kapanen

fridayinsiderA weekly feature aimed at rounding up a whole lot of odds and ends from a whole lot of time spent around our local teams …

• Kasperi Kapanen is a child by any professional sports standard at age 18 years, three months. But he also just might be in the Penguins’ opening-night lineup Thursday against the Ducks, based on what I’m told from on high inside the organization.

Imagine that, huh?

It’s not just Kapanen’s age that would be impressive about the situation but also the fact he was taken No. 22 overall in the June draft. That, of course, doesn’t necessarily mean the 21 ahead of him won’t someday surpass him. Prospects develop at a different pace, and forwards have the easiest assimilation into the NHL. But it does mean Jim Rutherford and staff look dead-on in the unbridled joy they displayed that night in Philadelphia on the draft floor. And I mean, you should have heard what they were saying off the record. They flat-out love the kid.

Tuesday 12 Qs: Cole, Wing, Greiss, Lance, racism

Ghost: So, no Gerrit Cole tomorrow. Still like having Edinson Volquez take the ball, with how he’s pitched for the Pirates. Gotta beat Madison Bumgarner first. But once they do, isn’t Cole lined up to pitch twice vs. the Nats? If they can just beat Giants, looks like pitching lines up optimally, far as we can go.

DK: To start, welcome. Kind of surprised it was this hard to pick out a wild-card question from the bunch — as opposed to the usual Russell Martin angst — but hey, it’s your event!

Steelers PATs: A performance Worilds apart

DEJAN KOVACEVIC, DK ON PITTSBURGH SPORTS

A last look at the Steelers’ last game …

Worilds

Worilds

• Jason Worilds had a tackle Sunday. Also, two quarterback hits. And no, I don’t remember any of those things happening, either. In fact, just about the only things I can remember happening for him are things that happened last season.

Remember that, when he suddenly emerged into this superlative sack machine?

You don’t need numbers to be convinced that the 2013 version of Worilds is no more, but here are some, anyway: He has nine tackles through four games, six solos and one for a sack. That means that, of his 270 snaps to date, only 3 percent have resulted in him bringing a ball-carrier to Mother Earth. He also has no forced fumbles, no passes defensed, no nothing else. Pro Football Focus ranks him eighth among the 14 NFL outside linebackers operating in 3-4 defenses who have participated in three-quarters of all defensive snaps. That’s just below average with a minus-1.2 grade.
