News/views: Russell Martin to Jays for $82M

Really?! No way. Well...playing in his home nation. Still, wow.

Thanks a lot, Obama

I had the same thought. Hate to see him no longer a Pirate, but he deserves the contract length, deserves the money, and wanted to be close to home. I can only hope the best for him.

Where are the tissues?!

My God is right. But, hey, good for him. Can't blame him that the economics of baseball .... well, just read DK's column from last week for that.

Also, is Gammons still with ESPN? For some reason I thought he had gone to MLB Network?

Interesting. On MLB Trade Rumors, last night, the CUBS were named the front runner, and speculation was 4 years, $64M. THAT is a number the Pirates could've lived with. 5 years/$82M is way, way, way too much for Martin. C'est la vie. Bon voyage, Mssr. Mar-tan.

Wow, crazy money. But good for Russ. Can he repeat 2014 five times?

Wow. I originally thought I'd want to know what the Pirates offered Russ. Now, I couldn't care less. Even if the Bucs offered more than the vast majority of posters thought was the high end of reasonable, it wouldn't have been enough.

This is actually the best news (other then the very unlikely resign with Bucs news)..in that Russ is OUT OF THE DIVISION and OUT OF THE LEAGUE. Having him on the Cubs would've been tough...but this is much better.

Going to the AL for 5 years makes sense what with the DH. Good luck, RM, and thanks for all you did for the Burgh

Going back to re-read Dejan's column on a salary cap for baseball. Here is a new Exhibit "A".

Pirates need to release what the offers were.

Call me in 2019 and let me know what he is doing then. This is insanity and the Pirates are now relieved of fan pressure for not signing him

The Blue Jays are always good for a laugh. Hope they make a good deal when they trade him.

"If any sane individual thinks the Pirates should have made that level of commitment, I've got a white jacket with really long sleeves here that’s got your name on it."

Does that jacket have the DK on Pittsburgh Sports logo sewn on it?

So now it will be interesting to see how the Bucs spend that $60 million that they were willing to give to Martin. That money was in the budget, so hope they spend it and spend it wisely.

Holy dollar signs, Batman, that's a lot of dough!

Grab that cash with both hands and make a stash.

On other Central news, the Cardinals traded for Jason Heyward. Really don't like those guys. Lol

He's a creep and should be booed everytime he touches the puck. How dare he sign with the highest bidder! This is America, or Canada.

Can't blame Martin for taking top dollar in his home country. It was a pleasure getting to watch him play the game the right way the last couple of years and I wish him well.
